A friend of mine is looking to buy an amphibian float plane and is looking for a place to go get the rating. Anyone know of a good place to recommend to him? He is located in SW Missouri and will go wherever he needs to go. He is a retired Airline Captain, CFII/A&P but flying on the Sport Pilot ticket.

I did mine in two days with Tom Brady in Traverse City, MI. The only reason we did it in two days was weather issue.

Although, if he buys the plane first, I can get him his rating.

He is looking at a Challenger II on amphibious floats, would you have any problem using that? If not, let me know about how much, and send me your contact info so I can pass it along. Would you be willing to come down here and do it?

I did mine several year ago at Brown's Seaplane Base in Florida near Lakeland.
Highly recommend those guys. They use 85hp Cubs and it is fuuun!

2nd on Brown's Seaplane Base in Winterhaven. Did it in the winter, with frost on the ramp. Looked like the Northwest Territories. I think the Cub actually flies better with straight floats.

The guys at Moose Pass put you through your paces, and you get an Alaskan vacation out of it.

They are self-insured AFaik, if that matters to your friend.

Check out the Alaska forum on the Red Board, someone semi-recently posted about his experience there.

There is another guy in Homer, AK. Single operator, who I've heard good things about. He has liability insurance. http://www.floatplanealaska.com/

West coasters use Shebly's on the Colorado River near Laughlin NV

If your friend is looking for an instructor, Shannon Franklin is in the St. Louis area. He did a couple of years at Brown's and flew Beavers on floats for a couple of summers in ALaska.
He has a web site at http:www.franklinairservices.com.

Although I would love to get some dual in the Beaver at Ryan's at Flagler County (KXFL): http://www.ryanseaplanes.com/.

Make that two of us. I did my SES with them in their Husky, which at the time was very new. Was quite fun, and I wish I could find some time/money to get back up and get current in the seaplane.

I'll second the recommendation for Scenic Mountain Air in Moose Pass, AK. But, it's not a rating mill. These guys work in flying back country Alaska and you'll get a comprehensive sea plane and mountain flying course combined. They fly Super Cubs that are very well maintained onsite and Vern Kingsford, who owns the school and is the DE for your checkride, runs a tight ship there. It was one of the best vacation, learning experiences I've ever taken. We managed to get in some serious fly fishing in the world class Kenai tributaries while there and saw moose, bears, eagles, sheep/goats, caribou, ,.... There were a fair number of airline guys passing through for repeat trips there as well.

If this student is flying as a sport pilot isn't he stuck with using something that is LSA legal to get the seaplane rating? Jack Brown's w/J-3s would work but that kills some of the other options.

Gregg,

I don't believe so. He does not actually have a Sport Pilot License,(although I don't know if that makes a difference) He is a retired airline guy so I guess he has an ATP, but has chosen to excercise the privileges of a sport pilot.

Wouldn't the issue be if he has a current medical in order to exercize PIC priveleges during the checkride, if he is not in a LSA?

He has a lot of J3 time, so I think this is where he is planing on going.

Were it me, I would go to Adventure Seaplanes (MN in summer, FL in winter). They're one of the VERY few operations that will rent you a seaplane solo. Even if I had my own, I'd go there just to support them because of that!
