Looking to plant some Arborvitae by a busy road, and just wondering how far back I need to keep it so it doesn't get killed by road salt.

Will the city or county let you plant between your property line and the pavement?

I see it all the time, evergreen trees killed by salt spray. It may depend some on the speed of traffic & common winds. A few species may be more resistant.

If you lived in northern NY state I'd tell you that New Hampshire might be far enough away. This state salts the roads like they're trying to turn them into bacon.
