Based on a study I did of accidents involving certain Cherokee models, about 11% involve the engine itself (undetermined loss of power, mechanical issues, or carb ice), while about 13% involve fuel management (either exhaustion or starvation).

Here's a breakdown of mechanical failures:

The study included PA-28-140, -161, -180, and -181 accidents from 2001 to 2010.
