Somewhere in there, they show the video of the lunar landing from inside the LEM alongside a simulated view from google moon - way cool - you can see the same craters and features as they follow the path down.

Of course, we all know that google is in on the conspiracy and faked the pictures in google moon. :rolleyes2:

*sigh* I find it harder and harder to watch the old Apollo video. What an amazing era, filled with such promise!

I imagine it would be the same feeling, watching the old newsreels of Lindbergh landing in Paris, if we had then never built airliners or flown across the ocean again...

We won't have that again, we have retrograded too far as a society, we don't look to the future anymore, we long for the past.

You my friend are an optimist. I don't think they look in any direction. Attention spans are down to seconds if even that. No plan for the future and no knowledge of the past.....except as necessary to demand reparations for whatever wrong they believe was perpetrated on them. . .
None of them have any idea that the cheap cell phone they carry was a result of the moon program. None are aware that the money spent on the space program benefits them in any way. I guess the fact that we'll be stuck on the planet til we kill it is probably a good thing. Hate to think of a race of brainless idiots spreading beyond earth. . .

Its a simple matter of being reduced to the lowest common denominator. Instead of the exceptional among us being encouraged to flourish, the PC among us require them to hold short of their potential so the not-so-exceptional can keep up. The result is a society of average achievers and the "dumbing" down of the population, as a whole. If schools would stop indoctrinating our youth and instead return to a focus on the three R's (along with a renewed and updated science and civics curriculum) there would be a restoration of the greatness, pride, achievement, and moral foundation that once guided our society.

Interesting interview.

As far as the cultural stuff goes, remember back in the 60s people were wringing their hands about what society had come to. Same as today.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling. (Send me all of your money, I have "survival" kits for sale. Ha.)

Yeah, and the upcoming generation that caused that sentiment are now running the country!!

So what's your point?

So what's your point?
1. The "older generation" always thinks the younger one is screwing it up.

2. We have a tendency to look back through rose-colored glasses.

I say that as someone who actually remembers the 1960s.

I don't just remember the 60's... I say that as a 60's kid.

The past? I thought we longed for self indulgence and laziness.

When we were kids, we thought we could actually go to the moon or mars or venus. Kids today of that same age can't think past their next cellphone text message that might be so important that the earth will cease to exist if they don't check their messages immediately.

Reality and doing things that are different and new is not important anymore. Back to your regularly scheduled cellphones, drone tv, video games and box store mass produced prepackaged products...

Is the real problem the kids or the parents who work 60 plus hours a week and don't have the energy or stamina to take the kids out somewhere cell phones don't work on the weekends and show them something better?

Or the parents themselves who set the example of "never disconnected" by answering the boss' e-mail from their phone every Saturday?

It's not the kids fault, if you ask me. I know a number of families where the kids don't get to have cell phones or they can only use them during specific times, and mom and dad, no matter how tired, make sure the camping and fishing gear is loaded and ready to leave town on Friday night.

Their kids use the tech as an appropriate tool and don't live to play with their tech toys.

I'll admit, my line of work would screw up kids. But I don't have any.

I just meant past of not taking care of anyone, none of those expenses, back when the planet had less than a billion people and resources boundless for the taking. As soon as we inventented immunization, that changed and started us on this road, then with the advent of penicillin we really messed the balance. You can't take care of people and force them to live through disease and infection when nature would have them die and not feed them when they are healthy.

I think that you are mistaken. Sure, there is a huge bubble of people that fall into this category. Recall Henning's 80/20 rule. But there are many bright young high school and college kids who are champing at the bit to take on the world. I have a son graduating HS next week and a daughter entering her senior year next year. They and their friends are engaged, inspired, and unwilling to take no for an answer. Most of them are downright brilliant.

Interestingly, almost none of them watch TV.

They will all be beaten down within a a decade is the sad thig. You can't be an "up" person in our society because we are set up to beat each other down rather than raise each other up.

Nah. They'll adapt.

It's us old fogeys that can't figure out how to ignore people who cause us perceived harm.

Or as Doc Bruce would say, "Welcome to your demographic!" ;)

Hmmm... amazing... promise!? Considering that this was Cold War era and this Cold War was directly responsible for the Apollo program (which Armstrong readily admits during the interview), I find word 'amazing' rather very peculiar here.

By the way, I really enjoyed watching the recreation of the last 3 minutes of the LM landing and the big boulders around the West Crater. First time I saw the view that Neil saw when he decided to fly somewhere else.
