What the hell? Is this a real issue in GA or is this the AOPA trying to drum up money? Is the FAA serious?

Any pilot with a BMI of 40 or higher will be required to go through extensive testing at his or her next medical exam, and required to complete an overnight sleep study with a board–certified sleep specialist– to determine whether they have sleep apnea.

What’s more, the FAA has already announced that it wants to expand this policy to include every pilot with a BMI of 30 or higher—a group that includes more than 120,000 pilots.

My BMI is a 32, and I do have sleep apnea. I sleep with a cpap for a reason. (Seriously get a cpap.. it's the best..)

Why is this a thing? I don't plan to sleep while PIC..

Are the FAA worried about stroke or other sudden medical issues maybe? Or is this a complete waste of time and money on their part or is this a legitimate concern?

More over does the fact that I sleep on a cpap something I have to worry about? 'cause I'm telling you now I'm not giving that up.. hah I'm hoping they will see that as an acceptable treatment for the issue.

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to ask. The FAA is ok with using a CPAP to take care of your Sleep Apnea. What they are targeting is the population of pilots that may have OSA and are not getting it treated with CPAP. Because of their concerns with the number of pilots that may have OSA and are not seeking help they are trying to mandate a sleep test if you are BMI of 40 or higher and have a 17" or greater neck size. AOPA is fighting this potential testing.

You are aware that using CPAP required a Special Issuance medical, right?

Woops sorry.
