Every week I receive pounds of mail from AOPA. Credit cards, life insurance, airplane insurance, wings program, renew and save, renew and get free gift, auto renew and receive more sweepstakes entries, subscribe for this and get a discount, I could go on.

I've averaged 2-3 letters or offers from AOPA per week and a flurry more in the 2-4 week period after getting my student certificate, and private certificate.

Is it this bad for everyone? Call me Andy Rooney but I'm annoyed.

I've gotten my magazines, and I got the christmas cards. That's it.

And I don't mind heavy paper, as our recycler gives us coupons for our recyclables, by weight.

I'm not a member and I still get a ton of crap from AOPA, including mailings about aircraft insurance that would, at best, be considered a scam.

It's just one of the reasons I dropped my AOPA membership and don't regret it at all.

It's interesting to compare AOPA with the NRA and GOAL. Neither the NRA nor GOAL have sent me any junk mail.

I have requested that AOPA take me off of their mailing list no less than 4x. It makes no difference, they still send me their crap. I now treat them like credit card companies; tear up the papers, stuff it back into their postage paid envelope and mail it back to them. If I was still a member I'd be torqued they waste so much $$.

Maybe its because I am a new member. My dad is a 30 year member and I don't think he gets as much mail as I do.

I don't mind mail -- I can toss that.

But I've told them that if they call my cell number ONE more time, I would permanently cancel my membership. That sort of crap is totally uncalled for, IMHO.

I don't get much. Mostly, I get ads for Legal Services plan.

Now that's funny!

I get piles of crap from AOPA constantly. No membership stickers for the cars, or those actually-quite-useful paper chart rulers for a very long time, though.

They're completely losing touch with the needs and wants of their membership.

I have learned to have fun with the phone solicitors Tom Mabe style.

I haven't been a member in a while and I keep getting the magazine and everything!!!

I used to get phone calls but after telling them I didn't care what AOPA did in the future, what they had done (selling out my airport) ment that I thought AOPA needed to be strung up by the gonads and left to rot, I would never renew they finally stopped calling.

BTW I used much more grafic and colorful language on the phone with the nice lady who called me for the third time in a week wondering why I wasn't renewing.

They send me 2 copies of flight training mag each month. I called 4 months ago and told them I didn't need 2 copies. Now I want to get that switched over to aopa pilot. Wonder how long that will take. By the time that actually happens, i'll be in my 30's, winning lottery ticket in hand and then I will want turbine pilot.

They are sending me offers for products that I am already subscribed to (for example, term life insurance and plane renter's insurance).

Why don't they know I already have these things?

I am upset because the mail person recently stopped delivering my mail to my tiny apartment (mail room, small letter shaped box). It got so full of junk and I didn't check it every day so they just took it all away. I was mad since they didn't even leave a note.

I had a day off, went to the post office, picked it up, and got it re-started.

Took out all the pounds of junk and what was left could have easily fit in my tiny box.

Grrrrrr.

My Private Pilot Cert is a license to learn.

My AOPA Membership is their license to try to sell me stuff.

i emailed some guy and asked him to stop the mailings. he did and they did stop. then i let my membership laps once i realized i haven't looked at the website or read the magazine for at least 6 months.

Just call or email the member services. You can shut off everything from postal mail to telephone calls.
