Anyone been to KHOT lately? Hot Springs AR

We were there during racing season this year. Still some limited capacity issues, etc. at that time, which should be removed by now. FBO is always easy to work with and friendly. Getting a rental car was no issue, but was warned that there is no longer a taxi service operating in town (which may or may not be true as we saw a taxi while on Central Ave) and if trying to use Uber/Lyft - the drivers are coming from Little Rock and probably only around on race weekends.
 
I’ll Lazarus this thread. Planning next weekend, for a quick overnight. Been to the town before, looking for gouge on the field itself.

Easy in and out. Good FBO, plenty of crew cars but can get field delivered rentals. A 25 minute trip to Burl’s smokehouse at Crystal Springs for a sammich on home made bread and some jerky and beef sticks for the road is a must (south side of Lake Ouachita). An overflight of the lake at 1000’ agl is very nice.

Be cautious of NORDO traffic and the intersecting runway. Just because the wind favors one runway, don’t discount a non talker going against the flow.

Is the control tower still standing at KHOT? I remember many years ago as a newly minted private pilot, flying witha friend who was also a newly minted private pilot, landing at KHOT treating it like an uncontrolled airport, making our radio calls on CTAF. On rollout we both noticed the tower near the runway and our jaws hit the floor. The entire taxi in we were double checking our charts trying to find evidence we missed about it being a towered airport. When we got to the FBO, I sheepishly asked the line staff about the tower thinking we were in big trouble, just to find out the tower had closed months beforehand.
 
The old tower is still there. Last trip there some hippie chick with very long hair was up there hanging it out of a window while daring a princely looking line crew to grab a hold. ;)
