install a vhf antenna where the adf loop used to be? Granted it's on the underside of the fuselage, but for in flight use, should be just fine for a handheld.

Great for a handheld. Just pull coax and install a BNC connector in a convenient place

I did the same thing. I hate putting new holes in an airframe. When I removed the ADF antenna I used the forward hole for an ADSB out antenna and the aft hole for a com antenna
