the local airport gang and I are headed out 5am tomorrow for Johnson Creek, we should be there Monday morning.

If anyone else going to be there, stop by the white and blue Cessna 140 and say hi!

No, but I wish I was! One of my all-time favorite fields.

I can see why- especially for you skywagon folks- seen more skywagons in last week than I have my entire life! That was a riot! We couldn’t have had more fun or relaxed more!

The old Cessna 140 Miniwagon did awesome! I and all my traveling family (7 planes-10 ppl) were impressed with how she did! I kept her light and had no issues with 6-7000’ DAs along the way. JC was only strip I went into, but dealt with those DAs at airports on way in and out. Take off roll was not much longer than normal (thank you VGs) but one did have to stay disciplined to hold her in ground effect for a significant time before actual climb out. But usually started with 350fmp and could work up to 500fpm within reasonable time. None of us expected that solid of performance out of a 140 with just a c85 stroker at those DAs...

Coming into JC I did turn final high (shocker for a JC rookie) but a rudder to the stops slip took care of that in fast order and made one of my best landings I’m capable of.

It was a trip of a lifetime for me- the stars there are enough to make ya cry.

Used to go there in the Maule with the fat tires and it made me feel pretty good about myself but then some old codger would show up in an Ercoupe and deflate everyone's ego a bit. :(

Wish I could but I don’t have a high wing.

Why do you need a high wing?

Huck - what route did you take to get there? And dare I Ask...how long did it take?

Don’t need a high wing for JC. It is simply the very best Idaho backcountry strip for everyday people and airplanes. Lots of Bo’s in and out along with Mooney’s and other low wings. The only other strip that would be accessible to everyday planes and pilots would be Cavanaugh Bay on the south end of Priest Lake. Very wide and something like 3500’ in length. Land from the lake side and take off toward the lake. Like JC, lots of up elevator when taxing and during the takeoff roll.

I will have to put that all together, it changed from original plan due to wind and weather... I would say 16 hours of actual flight maybe... I’ll update ya once home and updating log book.

Taking us 3 days to get home, weather slowed us this morning but then one of the planes had a minor breakdown at a gas stop- all good now but stopped us from getting home...

Yea there’s no reason most anything can’t go in and out with some care and caution... one of our guys had a Debinaire and another a Navion... besides for the risks of the mountains the strip itself is a beautiful 3800 x 150 manicured grass strip. We watched a Cessna Caravan come in, land and leave even- so no need for a bush plane or even close

Isn’t full up elevator the normal for all taxi operations besides insane tailwinds? Oh wait some of u guys have 3rd wheel on the wrong end ;) Just giving u a hard time :)

No, full elevator up is not always the case on grass strips. Grass does not necessarily equal soft, saw a 182 almost put it in the trees at 6Y9 because they were doing the soft field takeoff technique and dragging the tail so much that they could never generate enough lift to overcome the drag of the angle of attack from the wings.

Just enough elevator to keep the nose light, but NOT full elevator.

I corrected it- I meant all taxi operations

Taxiing at 5kts in a nose wheel the elevator back doesnt do much or anything to keep the nose light. Even if there was a gust from behind while taxiing in a nose wheel it isn't going to lift the tail unless its somewhere around the stall speed of the aircraft.

Correct, I was just giving him a light hearted hard time, it was just a fun hearted dig at nose wheel drivers is how I intended it.

Yeah, I just wanted to nip the "a lot of elevator" on grass in the bud because a lot of CFIs teach grass fields = soft fields, and most of the time, even if wet, they aren't.

Valid point, yea I think you’re right...

Shoot! I was at Stanley (2U7) this weekend, I would have hopped over to say "Hi" if I had seen your post earlier... Sounds like you had/are having a great trip!

Oh man that would have been fun! We had a great time it was beautiful, not just JC but the entire flight and all of the country we saw. The old 140 did great even in high DA she did every bit as well that could be expected and a bit better than I expected honestly. But I kept her light so that helped. Mountains were intimidating at first but went well, I had a real experienced guy I flew right with which really helped.

Really bonded with the gang that went, 7 planes, 10 ppl... met a great guy named Tim in Iowa who took us under his wing when the 180 on the trip’s starter went out and we couldn’t get it hand propped..
