I have a valid 3rd Medical. I am considering basic med. I would appreciate hearing folks who switched to basic med and knowing if their insurance costs increased or stayed the same. Please if you do not mind, keep replies from folks with first hand experience.

Zero impact in our 4-person partnership, with three of us on basic med. I had a long conversation with our broker when we renewed last fall. Time in type and age are the predominant factors in our rates. Basic med vs a class 3 seems to be irrelevant. YMMV.

That is solid good info. Thanks for sharing. I am soon to be 69. I have a Zenith Cruzer, insured by Global. I am told to expect a jump in costs when I turn 70. Can't wait....;)

I’ve got an experimental aircraft that does 230+ kts, no change in insurance for moving to BM. Time in aircraft is the primary exposure rating…for now.

Doesn't appear to make much difference in fixed gear singles....but different if in something that can kill you quickly.
I don’t know if my rate is higher because of BasicMed (T210) but my first year application as a ‘0’ time in M/M, ‘0’ retract time had only two underwriters that would allow BasicMed. It did limit my choices but my second year with 140 hrs in M/M had more underwriters willing to bind with BM at a reduced premium. Time/experience seems to be the primary driver but, as Doc mentions, in a complex aircraft, lack of a FAA medical can be an influence.

No change for me other than normal annual fluctuations. I'm 73 and shifted to Basic Med when I was 70. I fly a Maule MX7-180C.

Age 64, own a Beech Musketeer, insured with Assured Partners / AIG. No impact from Basic Med.

There are so few crashes that are caused by medical incapacitation that Basic Med vs. 3rd Class should be a complete non-issue. I suspect underwriters who don't accept Basic might not have done any real research.

Lots of folks posting covereage with Assured Partners. It also seems that Time in Type and age are the big factors. Thanks for posting.

That is very important to know. As others have said. Time in Type and age seemed to be the top two factors. Thanks for posting.

AOPA members get a discount. My discount is enough to cover my membership dues, which is about the only reason I haven’t cancelled AOPA. Yet.

I hope the same will be true for BasicMed -> MOSAIC.

I didn't have any problem when I was renting LSAs as a Sport Pilot with only a driver's license.

Many of the planes now available to SPs under MOSAIC (172s, Cherokees, etc.) are actually easier to fly than most LSAs, so I don't expect insurance to become a problem. Time will tell.

This got me thinking (which is quite dangerous):

I'm in the process of renewing my insurance, and I noticed that the Open Pilot warranty says "Any Private or more advanced pilot...." Now, my Musketeer doesn't fall under MOSAIC (but a Bonanza does; go figure), but I'd be curious about that restriction for MOSAIC-eligible planes. If anyone has one and has renewed since MOSAIC went into effect, take a look at your policy and see if the Open Pilot section says "Any Sport or more advanced pilot..."

My premium was not affected by going from Third Class to BasicMed - RV-8A, and now in a Cessna 175. Actually, with each plane my premium decreased slightly each year.

Avemco sent a message saying my existing renter's policy is also good under MOSAIC/sport pilot rules with no increase in premiums. (Still working on that medical!)
