Any Duke Drivers?

Re: Duke flight

I was just curious, with traveling planes Flightaware is a good way to see if one is flying regularly. :D

Some corp and charter ops block their tracking for security and competitive purposes. I've watched it come and go regularly and since it is usually in the flight levels I know it's going IFR.

Todd Sanderson's video is hilarious. He used to be a real character on BT.

Yeah. There are some inaccuracies in the video, like the fact that the Duke has a top intake (similar to your plane) and not through the sump (like the Aztec). Also interestingly, the through-the-sump intakes usually do LOP quite well.

I flew another Duke today...fourth different tail number in two weeks. I think I've adapted to their nuances and absolutely love the way they handle in the sky. I am still taken back by the powerful scream of those TIO-541s on takeoff. It's darn near scary. But you're up and gone pretty darn quickly!

The itch is growing to get her up high and headed someplace far away.

You must have a large number of Dukes on the field or nearby. I've only seen about 4 in my flying career, scattered in various parts of the country. Is the local mech one of the well-known Duke specialists?

Yep...Gary Bongard is one of the Duke gurus a lot of people look to for maintenance. He's the brains behind the carbide lifter mod that saved the Dukes from obsolescence. Bill Halpin, the guy that took Gary through his A&P years ago, is our main mechanic and services many Dukes. Gary owns the one I've been flying the most. The one I flew today was in for service and needed a test flight so I flew and Bill rode along to log dual for his commercial which I am preparing him for.

That's a great resource to have learning to fly those things. And sounds like fun!
