Another casualty of Firecrown, Russ Niles out at AVweb

I don't think Dave Martin had a background in experimental aircraft, either. The editor doesn't really have to, if they've got a stable of writers with the appropriate expertise. Doesn't sound like the case, now.

In the new FireCrown paradigm, "stable of writers" = AI.

Yes and no. Experience in the field will help the editor know which stories are relevant, how much rope to give, that sort of thing. Hard to have a strategy when you're unfamiliar with the category. I suspect they'll move away from the educational aspects, since that's "boring."

I just came across this but want correct the record on Dave Martin (and not necessarily dispute the premise). Until he passed away five years ago, Dave was a neighbor at Independence (OR) Airpark and built one of the earliest RV-12s. When he sold his last airplane (some nondescript wood-winged taildragger) I accompanied him on the final cross-country (as a safety pilot). These were just two of his many experimental aircraft connections.

Regarding the "stable of writers", Dave held his own in that regard with many articles published in "KitPlanes". During that last cross-country he borrowed my laptop in the motel so he could write the Kitplanes article describing our trip.

I also know Dave bought a Space Walker, I saw it ~20 years ago when I stayed at their house.

But I think he didn't have the homebuilding background when he *started* at Kitplanes.
