I’m a private pilot and I was pursuing my instrument rating when I took a break to knock out the written test. My “break” turned into a year absence. During that time, my third class medical lapsed. I had LASIK a few years ago and I really don’t feel like jumping through the hoops needed because my vision is barely 20/40... for that reason, I’m considering Basic Med so I can continue my training and eventually become a CFI. If I do get the Basic Med now, am I able to get my second class medical later on if I decide to jump through all the FAA hoops for my vision stuff? Just curious in case I ever want to use the commercial rating privelages. Thanks for the info!

Yes.

There is no penalty for operating under BasicMed and then later returning to the other medical certificate classes.
