Seeing Bruce's Angel Flight thread made me remember to sign up to volunteer for that type of organization. I didn't quite get the complete gist of that thread, however. Who was Ed Boyer head of?

I went to sign up for Angel Flight East, and they have a $45 registration fee to volunteer. It would seem that if I am volunteering my time and plane expenses, the registration process could be taken care of by other means. Is this typical of all of the organizations? Are there better organizations to volunteer for?

I am a commercial pilot with a twin engine plane.

You're kidding, right? Can you post a link to that for us? What's the use/purpose of the fee??? Seems like a good way to drive away volunteers.

Angel Flight South Central has no such requirement, and I've not heard of others having it.

I don't see such a requirement for Angel Flight Georgia.

Angel Flight West has the "membership fee" as well. It is one of the reasons I chose AFSC. West also wouldn't let me fly missions without going through a bunch of non-sense pilot checkout "orientation". South Central, "you want to fly, ok your a command pilot"

I can understand a flight test just to check your competence. It can be a huge liability to the organization if a pilot had an accident with a patient/passenger onboard. But, it should be by another volunteer such as a CFI, etc.

I understand it as well, although not a flight test. I tried on multiple occasions to schedule one with no luck. My CFI was given command pilot status without it since he was already flying professionally. They now claim no such waiver is possible. South Central holds a conference call weekly to take care of that, although that has only recently been added. All I did was fax them my application and insurance and instantly had CP status.

Oh, and West now has a $50 annual membership fee.

Apparently, most of them require this.

Neither Angel Flight Central nor LifeLine Pilots have a fee. AFC does have a pilot orientation call, but no checkride. They both require 250 hours PIC and insurance.
