Careful, those things can give you salmonella.
The turtles think their "land" environment is pretty boring...
Oddly enough, I've been handling reptiles and amphibians for more than 50 years and never caught it. I think I must be immune because a fairly large percentage of cold-blooded animals do carry the bacteria. I probably built up an immunity from all those dives I ate in when I used to work the night shift in New York City.

I like turtles. Im that guy that stops in the middle of the street and helps the turtle across the road.
Not sure you can build up immunity to salmonella, may have more to do with the places you get the animals from. Every turtle I every had, 2 or 3, ended up lost then found dead under a carpet or piece of furniture. It's amazing how good of escape artists those guys are.
I have seen turtles crossing the road all my life and never saw one flattened by a vehicle until last summer. I think some people run them over for the hell of it. Can't understand that. Now a squirrel, that's a different matter.
Going out to dinner one night with the wife, we came across a painted turtle butted up against a curb heading towards a mall - I dutifully pulled over, hoisted said turtle back towards wildness - for which it thanked me by emptying its bladder all down my pants leg. Plans for date night cancelled.
Be careful out there.
Yeah, they are ungrateful little bastages!

-That they got from some guy who picked them up to "help" them cross the road.Careful, those things can give you salmonella.

I've gone around for a turtle on the runway - the airliner in front of me reported a big one right off the centerline as they were rolling out. I said '**** it' and broke off the approach until the airport ops people could get the poor turtle back to safety. I'm pretty sure my passengers still think I was completely FOS.![]()
