The ol' Santa Monica slam dunk. What kind of rate of speed reduction can you get in the DA40 going downhill?

Indeed the normal slam dunk descent... and as you note, even at idle the DA40 descending at ~1000 fpm is moving along pretty well.
 
At least you can push the prop forward on the DA40 to help a little.
