Two or three aboard, but then the story says they were picking up a passenger.

SANTA MONICA – A small plane on a volunteer medical transportation flight crashed into Santa Monica Bay Monday, killing two people, authorities said. Searchers were looking for a third person reported aboard.

The pilot was Peter D. Tomarken. Sound familiar?

I did some Googling:
Yep. That was his name:

Yep, That was him:

Sad...and bad for Angel Flight.

I remember watching the first airing of the "Press Your Luck" show where the "professional gambler" got them for over $100,000. He won so much so long it took shows to capture his round. Game Show Network is doing a special scandal show, which may be about that. As far as I knew he just had figured out the pattern.

Two shows.

And this is sad for both Angel Flight, the GA community, and for those of us who grew up watching that show.

Broken connecting rod.

NTSB said:
The six cylinder Teledyne Continental IO-520-BA engine was examined. Both magnetos were severed from their attachment flanges and were resting on the top of the engine case. The case had a hole that stretched between the top cylinder base nuts of cylinders 1 and 2. The hole was approximately 8 inches across and 6 inches at its widest section fore and aft.

The number 2 cylinder connecting rod was visible through the hole and portions of it and the connecting rod cap were fractured from the rod end. A 2.5-inch portion of the connecting rod from the crankshaft end contained the top portion of an attachment bolt and was located loose within the engine, just below the connecting rod.
