American - Same Callsign Same Airspace

I think I heard this with another pair of American flights recently too, like within the last 2-3 weeks. I can't remember where I was at the time, but I haven't been to Phoenix in a couple of months so it wasn't the same one.

They're not supposed to be using the same callsign simultaneously - If the same flight ends up being delayed and is in the air at the same time as another flight with the same number, they're supposed to append a letter to the callsign for one of them. If you ever hear something like "SkyWest 1234Whiskey" that's why. So yeah, I think American dispatch screwed this one up.

gee, if only we had some kind of super advanced technology that could identify duplicates and warn us… maybe in decades to come, who knows
Advanced technology seems to be the culprit here. I retired as a Controller in 2002. All the automated Radars I worked with would warn of duplicate Call Signs and Duplicate Beacon Codes. A Controller wouldn’t have to ‘discover’ it like this guy did. The new stuff seems to have a glitch.

Same thing happened with JetBlue this week, inbound and outbound flights operating at Providence RI with the same flight numbers.

It might appear that an inbound flight was delayed but was a scheduled thruflight. The airline put a different airframe onto the outbound flight to keep a scheduled departure on time.
