I've been a happy customer of Amazon Prime. The 2 day shipping is a good value, even at the new higher $100 annual fee. I don't use the video or music service that comes with it.

Surprisingly, Amazon recently offered me the same 2 day shipping without the annual fee. A "business account". No online movies or music, which I didn't want anyway, just the 2 day shipping, gratis. They even suggested that I could quit Prime if I like.

I'm not sure, but I would guess this service is probably available to anyone who has registered a corp or partnership with a state. I registered an L.P. once, and did mostly nothing with it, but Amazon seems to have detected that my Prime account and the L.P. had the same address and same name, so they offered me the free business account.

It could be that it would pay to register an LLC or LP with your state just to get free shipping fromAmazon.

I think it's free shipping on item's over $49.

You are correct, $49 minimum for the free 2 day shipping.

I suppose if you have more than about ten Prime orders per year that are less than $49, then you are better off paying for Prime.

It looks like anyone can setup a business account: "Anyone who belongs to a legal business, institution, enterprise, or other organization that registers with Amazon, and provides the required business information, can create an Amazon business account."

Beside no free music,pics,movies... it looks like the biggest difference is account management features and reports.

I love my Prime account. The Prime Music and Movies are great... and now, with Echo, I use the music feature much more. After 7 months, Echo is now on sale to the general public. I'm guessing it will be a Christmas Gift favorite, and drive a lot of people to a Prime account.

How do you like echo? I've heard the functionality/speech recognition leaves a lot to be desired.

Love my Echo and use it all the time. Still learning everything it will do, but I'd still think it was worth it if it only did the music thing. Voice recognition is amazingly good, even without doing any of the voice training, and considering it's not a perfectly quiet environment. 5-10% of the time you might have to repeat something, or she'll misinterpret something I've said, but I'll admit to not phrasing things right some times. For most "normal" things she's spot-on.

What's most amazing is how many features have been added in the last couple of months, and that was before the software development kit was available. I expect a flood of new features soon.

I recently learned that I'm in the "Prime same-day" delivery zone, when I ordered something and it showed up on my doorstep 6 hours later.

Amazon is moving from the "hey, neat" status to the "wow, that's logistical black magic" status for me... I cant imagine what their infrastructure looks like.. but it gets me a 6V car battery charger without the need to put pants on. :D

The future is here and I like it.

About a month ago I bought a new cell phone and various accessories on Amazon. My wife is a prime member so I bought all the stuff through her account. The cell phone itself was no prime eligible but the other two orders were.

The cellphone arrived in two day.

One of the prime orders arrived in three, the other four.

Go figure.

All orders were placed before 10am CDT.

If you have access to a .edu email account you can get a student prime - first 6 months free, and after that half price ($49/yr).
