Alton Bay open for business!

Only ice runway in the contiguous US? Not so.

It may be the only one that is colocated with a charted seaplane base, but it's most certainly not the only one. I know that someone puts one together on Lake Winnebago (the big one just east of OSH). And there's another thread about one up in MN on Mille Lacs too.

I think it’s the only official one with an airport designation (B18). I’m sure there are lots of lakes that have a plowed strip out there.

I bet a lot of charted seaplane bases maintain a plowed surface in the winter months, and certainly a lot of pilots remove the floats, convert to skis, and continue to operate from the same unplowed seaplane bases all winter.

B18 can claim the distinction; it's not hurting anyone.

It has hurt at least a couple of planes.

There’s always going to be incidents at the lake if pilots don’t check the winds and get an ice condition report.
