The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
Yesterday (Sunday morning, August 29) my instructor and I took advantage of the good weather to schedule a 3-hr training block to practice more landings in a towered environment. We also worked on the required engine out emergenies that would occur while near an airport.

After about the 10th lap, I asked for a break. Instructor Dan agreed (due to a needed coffee offload). Dan had mentioned he and a student recently were premitted to go up to the tower cab. After I asked for a switch from the option to full stop, Dan asked if it was okay for us to come upstirs to meet the crew and check out the view and what they see. We were given a cheery, "No problem! One of us will meet you downstairs."

We were met at the doors by one of the controllers who escorted us upstairs. The crew this morning were fairly young (late 20's), extremely friendly, and dressed like they were hanging out at the dorm rather than in charge of a significant bit of airspace. It was cool to meet the people on the otherside of the headset. We were shown their radar scopes, how they worked, what information they could bring up depending on if the target was VFR (1200), Flight Following, or IFR. They also explained and showed how they obtain and record the ATIS details. It was all very interesting and very informative.

The view out of the tower was amazing. We could easily see 10 miles in any direction. And the height above the ramp made our DA20 look like a Matchbox Micromachine.

As we left, all three of them asked us to spread the word that they want more flights to come by, especially on Sundays. In the 30 minutes we were there, there was only 2 radio calls, one twin departing, and someone transiting their airspace from the south. We were told that Sundays are pretty dead for them. They felt that if someone needed to work on their IFR approaches, the light traffic load would be perfect for them to accomodate you. VFR traffic is very welcome too.

We got a great resource over there, and a good environment to practice our craft. I hope more of you take advantage of it!

AFW has always been quiet. I remember getting the same request back in 2000/2001 when I was instructing out of ADS. They said PLEASE come by more often, we need the traffic count! Back then they also said we needed to 'touch' for the count to count. Just doing practices approaches and missed approaches didn't count for them.

They are a great place for practice instrument approaches, because they have a lot of them and very little day traffic - and (as noted) always act like they actually want you there.

Also, crew car available for lunch runs.

PS-

Hey, Stace!

more Sunday traffic?
Trying to pad the OT?! :D
Probably trying to keep the traffic count up so they don't lose staffing.

I think I was at KAFW on one of the only weekends they were semi-busy. They were having a race at that nearby track.

The crew I met were the "low on the seniority" folks (2 guys and one cute gal, but chronically married :ihih:).

The request was more because they are bored and want more to do than update the ATIS and play "guess the number of rivets on that Cherokee".

The did mention a requirement that during a calendar month, they needed 16 hrs of activity on one of the main workstations. Sorta like a currency thing we need for night, pax, and IFR. In almost all months, it's not difficult for them to obtain the needed time. But they always appreciate more activity to make that a certainty.

Is it safe to assume they mean any Sunday except race days?

Thanks for letting us know; the last couple times I went there we quickly left because it was so busy.
Did an IPC yesterday at five different APs and avoided Alliance because it's been very busy before.
We'll check with them next time we're heading that way.

Actually, each airport we did an approach at yesterday morning was pretty slow. Greenville Majors had low ceilings and we had to call approach for a clearance to VFR on top after doing an ILS there; Ardmore was pretty slow; Denton, Decatur; Stevenville was busiest; long wait for a ride to the Hard Eight!

Best,

Dave

Denton in the early mornings (around 7:00am) is pretty tame. I'm finding out that the school is working with 2-hour blocks starting at 8:00am. When I arrive to meet my instructor (6:40am for brief and dispatch). We were wheels off the ground at 7:10 and were the only ones in the area. (Tower opens up at 8:00am)

When we returned about 8:45 from Gainesville (KGLE) we were cleared to land RWY17 straight in at the 4 mile point, so not much happening then.

But if you wait about 10:00am, the classroom is standing room only with students and instructors working their briefings, and the pattern is very active. And be aware there are lots of Chinese and Indian students at the Academy. So be patient with the controllers and these students as they sort out the radio calls, their accents, and English not being their first language.

So for DTO, you sorta need to research when the ebb and flow is happening. Stop by on a down cycle and you're likely able to have the tower accommodate your request pretty easily.

Also, DTO will be getting it's own radar feed pretty soon. I heard the needed pieces are all in place and it will be up and going in a month or two.

Wednesday will be my first XC. And we're planning for Greenville Majors.

Since much of my flying has been to up and down the I-35 and I-35W corridor, it will be fun to check out the east side of town.

Wow, about time on the radar feed. They'd gotten the equipment in 2008 for a slave feed (I think a 10-20 second delay from ARTCC?) but they didn't have budget to get it installed.

Have fun going to Greenville. I've yet to trek out there. Tyler was my longer XC and Possum Kingdom was my short.

Alliance is great, and if you can ever get there at dusk, it's a beautiful sight. Never thought of asking to visit the tower. I'd heard such allowances were pretty rare.

Ha! Memory lane.

Possum Kingdom was my very first ever flight as a certificated Private Pilot. Brought my wife and son with me to demonstrate the magic of flight.

Didn't make it to Greenville due to equipment problems. Next day we went to Paris. Details on the DFW board.

Update to Denton: we have had radar for about 6 months and a new 7000' ry as of last week. We're more than happy to fit anyone in the pattern or run a few practice apps for ya. Most of us anyways. Lol.

Are you from the Tower crew?

Yep. If ur instructor at Usfa was Dan Hillman, he knows me.

Zack

The tower tour is really cool. I was able to do at KTOL (Yeah it's only a Class C)

They required Driver License numbers though so there was some "requirements" to get access.

Alliance is always a friendly place to fly in. Plus, it's beautiful at night. Once the club plane is out of the avionics shop, I should hop on over and play with different types of landings.

BE2, is your radar on a delay from DFW TRACON, or do you have your own system?

Yep. If ur instructor at Usfa was Dan Hillman, he knows me.

Cool!

Like to take you to lunch one day as a thank you for doing a good job and to trade for some time observing what things look like from your perspective in the cab.

And yes, Dan was my instructor. I was training mostly in the DA20's, mainly N969PA. Now been flying their Warrior.

I'll PM my contact info.

PS. How you liking having radar now? Must help with dealing with the international students who can't remember that "Report the Tower" doesn't mean the TWU Dorms.

Hey Zack:

I just noticed these fresh NOTAMs for KDTO... Since I haven't been the field in while, what are they doing on Taxiway "A" the required the closure?

07/023 Taxiway A3,A4 Closed. Effective Immediately Until Further Notice. Created: 25 JUL 11:20 2011
07/025 Taxiway A5 Closed. Effective Immediately Until Further Notice. Created: 25 JUL 16:05 2011
07/026 Taxiway A Closed Between Taxiway A6 and Taxiway A3. Effective Immediately Until Further Notice. Created: 25 JUL 16:06 2011

They're gonna crack seal and resurface alpha over the next 3 weeks now. If it's not 1 thing its 10, but u probably know that. Stage 1 is midfield. U still have bravo to A1/2 and A6/7 for ry access. After that they'll work on the the north/ south ends separately. It's not too bad and u get progressive taxi instructions anyways. U must have missed us using alpha as "RY18L" (3301x50) last week when the ry was closed for resurfacing. It was interesting yet surprisingly nobody rolled off the side or took out the midfield windsock. We were on the edge of our seats for every landing. Lol.

As far as radar, it's very nice. Helluva lot better than binoculars and hoping the students were inbound from the NW and not the SE. Lol. But sometimes u glance at the screen and our immediate area looks like buckshot w all the targets (it's funy when approach calls up and jokingly asks if we're busy... Smartasses) and ur like "how many ac r on my freq?!?"

I'll take u up on the offer and get w ya next week. I live in Corinth next to Oakmont CC, so I'm fairly local. (way better than when I commuted from Arlington.) ttyl.

Don't get me started on those international students. I've heard some horror stories from the guys in the Spinks tower. :mad2:

Some don't know what "360 on the downwind" means....

I can guarantee the kids outta DTO know what the 360 is considering we have to do it every day. Lol. They get a lot of the ATP guys from GKY. If u fly to Spinks often, tell Clint in the tower that Denton tower says to "wake up and do something ." Those slackers, lol. Jk.
