I remember from many years ago travel photographer Stan Midgely said

"the way to tell a Black Bear from a Grizzly is to kick it then climb a tree. If it climbs up after you it's a Black Bear. If it shakes you out of the tree it's a Grizzly."
 
When hiking in a group, wear running shoes. I know you'll never outrun the wildlife. You only need to outrun the other hikers.
 
Even for old Sourdoughs in a FBLP, it can be hard to tell whether it's an aggressive blackie or a grizz chasing you up a tree! A way to tell the distinction is the aggressive blackie will climb right up the tree after you and eat you alive, the grizz can't climb trees so rips the tree down and eats you alive.
