I have an acquaintance (brother of a co-worker) who left from Ohio last night in his 1943 2-1/2 ton military truck. His destination - Dawson Creek, British Columbia. That's a 2300 mile trip, one way, in a 70 yr old vehicle.

Top speed is about 35 MPH- no cruise control, no power steering, NO AIR CONDITIONING!! He has to get there by August 4th, so he's giving himself a little less than a month to make the 2300 mile trip.

Why is he driving to Dawson Creek? It's the 70th anniversary of the Alaskan Highway, which originated on Dawson Crreek and ends in Fairbanks, Alaska, 1500 miles away. Once leaving Dawson Creek, he will be in a convoy of at least 55 other vehicles of the same age/era.

When he's finished, he'll drive it 3800 miles back home to Ohio.

There's a link to follow the progress below, but it won't be tracking the individuals on their way to Dawson Creek, but will once they leave.

Wow... Road trip of a lifetime. A great opportunity to gather up some good stories from the folks he will meet along the way.

With luck it will be a wee bit cooler for his return. After a motorcycle ride outside today I would not want to be in a car sans AC.

That long in a deuce and a half. He'll be peeing blood by the time he gets back. Those things are some of the worst trucks we have in the fire service. We had roll over about a year ago when it lost its brakes.
