We're planning the 3rd(!) Annual AirVenture Irish Trad Music Session! We're tentatively scheduled for Thursday night (7/24) at 7 p.m. at the Ultralight Forums tent.

It's been growing a little bit each year, so we're looking forward to seeing even more musicians this time. I'd love to have more fiddles join, but all Irish instrumentalists are welcome. Last year, we had Mitch Loiselle of Banterra Aircraft Finance provide pizza and beer, and we had a great time. Things are still up in the air (ha!) this year, so we're playing it by ear (ha!). I'm flying in this time instead of driving, so we'll see if we can round up some folks to bring water. Hope to see some of you there!

Here's the write-up I'll be posting at various sites, including The Session (https://thesession.org) and the Flying Musicians site (https://flyingmusicians.org).

Are you excited about flying? Are you excited about traditional Irish music? Are you especially excited about both flying and Irish music? This year at AirVenture 2025, the Flying Musicians Association is hosting the third annual trad seisiún on Thursday night.

All attendees are welcome, especially those who play an instrument associated with Irish music—be it fiddle, tin whistle, uilleann pipes, concertina, button accordion, bodhrán, guitar, banjo, or mandolin. We’re inviting musicians of all skill levels, and we’ll find some tunes for you to join in. We even have opportunities for some singing!

For those who perform Irish dance—be it céilí dance, step dance, or anything else—you’re welcome to join the fun. Maybe rope in some spectators and show them how it’s done!

Finally, for those who don’t dance or play an instrument, come on down! We need enthusiastic clappers, foot stompers, and cheerers.

This is our chance to show off some Irish music and culture at the world’s greatest aviation gathering—and have a fantastic time together!

Okay, the preparations are going full speed ahead! We've submitted the notice to the AirVenture folks, I'm busy gathering lyrics and music for the sing-along tunes to place on a website and hand out, I've put together a couple posters (courtesy of multiple iterations in ChatGPT), came up with a t-shirt design (who knows if that's going to happen or not), and even ordered egg shakers for the audience to join in. I'm going to make it much more participatory this year, getting into a circle (or nested circles), and getting everyone singing along. Of course, also encouraging anyone from beginner on up to be part of it. I'm still working on where to send notices/invites for AV musician attendees so they know to pack their instrument.

I'd love any comments/suggestions you have. I'm getting all excited for this year!

Anyhow, here's the posters I've come up with. If you're at an airport where pilot-musicians hang out, consider putting one up on a bulletin board. They don't have any contact information, but people can look on The Session or the Flying Musicians site for contact information. My address is my first.last at gmail. My first name is mike and last is dewey.

To allow folks to get a head start on the music, I’m putting up the lyrics and sheet music at AV Session Lyrics and Music. It’s read-only. I’ll be adding sheet music for the trad tunes soon and a proposed “kick off the evening” set list.

I've added a proposed set list over at the Google drive (Link in previous comment). I'll be adding the sheet music for the trad tunes from The Session soon.

I'm getting excited for this and for AirVenture! I've started piling up stuff to take and weighing it for the plane.

Hi Folks,

I just finished uploading the sheet music for the trad tunes at AV Session Lyrics and Music. We're not limited to those tunes, since we can either go by memory or access The Session with my iPad.

I'd like to thank the Flying Musicians Association for allowing us to be part of their mixture of aviation and music. If you've know a young person looking for flying scholarships, take a look at their site.

Also, they have an open mic event on Friday night (7/25) at 8-10 at the Ultralight Forum tents. Come and let your inner Mick Jagger free!!

I've got my wristband, I've gathered my camping gear and sorting out my tin whistles. It's gonna be great!!

Is there going to be a test on this? :)

My only suggestion would be to throw up some videos of prior performances so those of us who will be out of town can at least see what you’re up to (or were up to in the past).

They’re really not performances. Sessions are just people hanging out and playing tunes. No costumes, stage lighting, fancy electronics, or groupies ;). Just dusty, sweaty people who’ve walked around AV all day. We all sit on folding chairs inside a pavilion tent with a grass floor. The few videos people have made are kinda disappointing. Maybe this year we’ll get some good ones, but I’m about as photogenic as a potato. But it’s fun and folks talk about music and airplanes and become friends.

You can get me going all day about the power of music to enrich our lives. To bring back memories and to form new ones. To join people together and to just have fun. The words of a song tell us something, and the music makes us feel something.

I claim that we are all musicians. Even when we just talk. There is a rhythm and cadence to our sentences. Our voices change pitch as we express ourselves and convey emotion. Music is a uniquely human experience that happens even without a stage and instruments.

Anyhow, so much for the TED talk :). There is no test, lol. I’m putting all this stuff up because some folks don’t have the tunes memorized, and by having a playlist we avoid, “I dunno, what do you want to play next?” and it gives at least some semblance of organization.

The reason I do this (besides loving planes and music and meeting people) is because it’s all really about what Paul Poberezny said: “Airplanes bring us together, but friendship keeps us together”. I would just include music with airplanes.
