I am looking for resources to explore building an airplane home / home office with a scrapped airplane. There are some good websites out there, but what I really need are places where I can buy scrapped airframes as well as architectural ideas for installing the airframe on the property.

Regarding a possible home office, vice home, does anyone have a suggestion of what kind of airframe to use? I think that the typical 727 and 737 would be overkill. Perhaps a G4 instead?

So far what I have is below is primarily about other people who have done this, but I need actual places where I can purchase the airframe. Ideas?

I know of a sad place where they buy old airplanes, part them out, and scrap them.

Any of these three planes look good to you, let me know and I can point you in the right direction. I bet they'd sell you the hulk, I imagine you would have to hire a flat bed semi truck to cart out the cut up pieces.

Try the outfit at the tupelo mississippi airport.

Thanks for the heads up on the Tupelo Airport operator. Their website and details are as follows:

United Asset Management: http://www.uaminc.com/index.asp
Headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., UAM is an environmentally-friendly industry leader in aircraft recycling and reusable inventory. The company operates in nine other locations throughout the U.S. and currently maintains over 535,000 inventory items and sells to more than 1,200 customers worldwide.

G-IVs will be expensive. G-IIs are cheap. I'm sure you can ind other hulls that are being scrapped from various commercial/military operators.

Take a look at square footage before ruling out the hull of a 727 or the like. Remember that, compared to a house, these things aren't that huge... at least depending on the house you want.

Good call. I am leaning toward a home office instead of a home. That said, GII would likely be the ticket.

Depending on the size needs of your office, a King Air 200 wouldn't be a bad choice, either.

Has anyone here ever priced out a scrap plane ?

If its price per pound and aluminum is paying , say .25 cents I would guess a 727 might cost 10 grand or so ??:dunno::dunno:..

Comments...

I talked with an aircraft scrap company out of Atlanta and he said that a Falcon 10 might be around $5,000 with some of the interior. I would imagine the difficult part for them is that the fuselage would be difficult to scrap because of the labor involved. I don't know the business and I don't know that as fact.

Wouldn't a gulfstream or falcon 10 (or any personal/private jet) get pretty cramped for a home office? Also, are you considering blending this into your home? That would look pretty cool to have the front third of a 727 sticking out of the front of your house. It would also be about the same length in terms of usable space as a small jet, and would be much wider and roomier inside.

A Gulfstream is a pretty big airplane. I wouldn't consider one cramped for an office at all.

A Falcon 10, yes, that would be cramped.

If I can't stand up in it, it's cramped! Really depends on your size though. To me, a 727 would look cooler, especially if it could nicely be transitioned into the house. Not sure what your house layout is, but you should consider having the plane coming out of the roof or second story if you can. Not only would it turn plenty of heads, but it would make you feel like you're in the air. But now I'm just dreaming...

There's some sort of operation at KARG too. They turned one 737 into an addition for the restaurant on-field, but there are other hulks sitting there too (including a 747).

A G-II looks pretty cool, but a 727 hull might be cheaper since there are so many dead ones.

Agreed.. supply and demand come into play here for sure.... What will eat your lunch is the additional trucking fees and oversized load permits the 727 will incur.
