Can someone tell me what the validity period for a 3rd class medical would have been in the 1990's? I seem to remember it being 3 years regardless of age, but I could be wrong.

When I started in the 1980s it was two years for everyone. It went to three years just before 2000. I remember I got exactly one three-year renewal in after they changed the rule and before I turned 40. I was too old to care when they increased it to five years for you young whippersnappers.

That's correct.
Not exactly. For third class medicals, it was 2 years for everyone up until 1997, then 3 years for certificates issued under age 40. In 2008, they extended 3rd class to 5 years for under 40 applicants.
