Who exactly is a flying billboard aimed it.

In the terminal, except for the little ones, most people ignore the aircraft except when it's not there.:D

If they lower the fares (or increase the pilots' salaries) as a result of it, I don't see a problem. That said, I really try to avoid flying commercial these days if I can, so it's generally a non-issue for me. Sorry there Matt, eh? :)

Maybe they plan to offer passengers ad blocking....for another fee, of course.

Pretty cheesy. But if that's what it takes to keep ticket prices where people can afford to buy and it keeps them in the air, hey, that's OK. But I'd have to draw the line at the strip of ads along the overheads like they have in city buses...and having pop-up ads on the EFIS screens would be going way too far!

This is only the beginning. In a recent article of Aviation Week and Space Technology, Spirit Airlines has come up with a new idea to increase revenue through advertisement. Their idea entails selling add space on their aircraft's table trays, overhead bins, and window panels. If that isn't annoying and comparable to NASCAR, I don't know what is.
 
Hehe wouldn't it be funny if they made the pilots wear uniforms like the racing suits used in Nascar????

US Air already has adds on the tray tables. I was a little surprised the first time I folded one down and saw an add for cell phones, or whatever it was! They don't have the adds in first class, though, go figure. The windows, though...that's just going too far, and I'd imagine (hope) the FAA would fight that as a potential safety hazard!

that would almost make me want to be an airline pilot. especially if they issued points for good landings, arriving on time, etc. I want to be the ALPA points champion!!
 
Why not just stream out a bannger during the STAR and reel it in on 3 mile final?
In LA thats millions of ppl for 20+ miles.

If F on US is similar to AA (the only domestic F product I get to experience), they don't advertise to us with a sticker on the wall, but with 4 magazines for the "luxury lifestyle". Drives me bleeping bonkers.

Has anyone other than me had the *gulp* RyanAir experience in Europe. I got a headache as soon as I walked into their terminal, and it didn't leave until I got off the stinking bus on the other side.

They don't dim the lights at all. Constant ads playing over what on any civilized airline would be the in-flight entertainment system. Stewardesses walking up and down the aisles selling food, drink, lottery tickets, cell phone plans, insurance, and anything else you can think of. And all the other passengers screaming and carrying on like it was the metro after a large football match.

I'm *almost* thankful that the return flight got canceled with no advance warning.

I've often thought that airline pilots would prefer a flight suit to the cheesy poly uniforms they wear - except for the leather jackets, which look cool. However, a nomex fireproof suit? That might make pax wonder what the pilots know and they don't! :yikes:
 
This was just a matter of time, I'm surprised it had not happened sooner.

Since the very first yacht club, it was always considered a huge social no-no to have any commercialism on sailing yachts. Even up until just a few years ago, it was specifically prohibited in most, if not all yacht clubs bylaws.

Ever watch an Americas cup race lately? I's about as close to Nascar as you can get.

San Diego renamed it's football stadium from Jack Murphy Stadium to Qualcom Stadium. The new baseball park downtown has been named PetCo Park.

I expect soon that the mayor and city council member will all be required to wear Micky Mouse Hats and Disneyland T shirts at all council meetings.

Didn't I see a warbird with Target's logo on it? :)

It's all about the buck, count on lots more of it.

Yabut at least you can ignore the mags.

PA announcements hawking a credit card or some other commercial product, stickers on the wall or tray table, standups on the food tray (in F) are hard to ignore. Yeah, I've experienced all of the above on various commercial US carriers recently.

Product placement has been around for a LONG time. Delta (among others) had deals with various vendors wherein they got the product cheap or free - Sun Chips was a recent example.

I seem to recall that RyanAir's whole selling point is "Get there really, really cheap." If that's what they're doing, that means they need to make up the cost somewhere.

Businesses are businesses, and it comes down to you need to make enough money at the end of the day to make it worth keeping your doors open. In an economy where people are demanding low prices, in order to deliver those prices something needs to give somewhere else. Given how rough it's been for the airlines the past few years, I have a hard time berating them for doing what they need to to keep the doors open.

If you don't like how an airline operates, you can always take your dollar somewhere else. :)

I don't mind the way B6 does it, because the Y product is nice enough, and the cabin features are nice enough, that I'll take the lower cost of the product if I have to 'endure' the advertisements.

I do mind the magazines because I see them as a monumental waste. A 10x8 sticker is pretty inexpensive to create and accomplishes a similar goal. It doesn't weigh as much, cost as much, etcetera. I doubt that those magazines are cost neutral or even profitable when you take into account the TCO of the product (making it, printing it, distributing it, carrying it on the plane).

Wasteful is a different issue.

Profitable? You betcha! The airlines don't pay for those magazines. The advertisers pay well. They would vanish in a New York minute if they weren't profitable.
