The FAA website lists >26000 aircraft whose registration is cancelled or pending cancellation!
Make sure yours is not on the list.
(Here is the list. If you are checking yours, they provide a faster search for it)

While I don't agree with the need to register (there is zero public safety benefit), it is pretty easy to do.
And we all know the $5.00 is set to skyrocket in price.

However if you don't do it, there are all sorts of problems.
I know of one that has been grounded for many months and no clear promise of resolution has been made. (it was lost in the mail, more or less)
What a nightmare.

If caught flying, one atty says in addition to fines/penalties expect a lien for same on your a/c, potential: loss of insurance, problems if you have a loan or if it serves as collateral on another loan, loss of your N number ie repainting/placarding your a/c, log entries.

I renewed mine on line just last week. I have only had my aircraft for 2.5 years and of course it was registered when I bought it. I thought we were getting more time than that before reregistration.

Did mine ,not due again till 2016. Can't wait to see what the fee will be by then.

registration is first, transportation to re-settlement centers is next

I wonder if some of the early and short numbers will become available? Do numbers of historic planes get retired and can't be used, such as N211 for Spirit of St. Louis?

The real problem is it's not easy unless you have the piece of snail mail with the magic number for your aircraft. I've never understand what the point of that is.

Further, the aircraft registry people are a pain in the ass to deal with compared to the airman registry. It's trivial to change your address as an airman. You can do it online or just mail them a letter or show up at the registry booth during Oshkosh. When I married my wife she just showed her marriage certificate to the woman in the booth. Easy peasy.

The aircraft registry needs this magic cookie to renew on the online site. You can ONLY renew on the online site, can't do anything else online (like change the address or note the legal name change of one of the co-owners). An address change takes a paper application with all the co-owner's physical signature. Same if you miss the online renewal window which ends months before you certificate expires. Even if you succeed to change your address with the FAA and they send you a new registration card (of course since they send it as a post card, the USPS or someone defaced it with a bar code sticker) they don't just renew you at the same time even if you're coming up due. Further, a month later, they send the renewal letter to the OLD address. Don't even get me started on the name change. Even though we physically presented the marriage certificate to the Aircraft registry person at Oshkosh, they didn't change it. It took me a year to get a response to tell me that they need to retain a physical copy of it (well why didn't they bleeding ask?). I mailed in one years ago and they appear to have just trashed it for some reason. I've tried again this year. Who knows, it's been 15 years and Margy's old name is still on the registration.

Oh, and I just noticed another registration bogosity. I changed my address a couple of moths ago. Nowhere on the form is a place to write in a county. As a result the computer seems to have magically listed me in "Accomac" County. This would be a simple error but there is no such place as "Accomac County." It's "Accomack County." I suspect the error derives because "Accomack" county is the first alphabetically. There is a town called Accomac (it's the county seat of Accomack) but it's not an independent city.

Virginia is a bit odd in that it has 38 independent cities which are politically NOT part of any counties. To be even stranger, some of the independent cities are the county seat for the surrounding county. To be even more perverse (Fairfax, Roanoake), some have the same name as the surrounding county as well. Amusingly the independent city of Salem is the county seat of Roanoake county not the independent city of Roanoake.

This is almost as much fun as New Jersey County, City, and Township Naming (Union County, Union City, and the (Township of) Union, and Union Township are all distinct places in NJ, though (Township of) Union is in Union County. Union City and Union Township are each in a different county in a different area of the state.

Mines got the wrong county too. The county they put in is real, just I'm not in that county. I think I'll leave it well enough alone. You're right, the registration people and process is retarded. I moved back in 2011, so I needed to change the address. It took several forms and papers back and forth and finally a trip to the FSDO to get it "right". Like I said, they still show my old county, but I really don't want to go through that again.

I am assuming they send a renewal notice or something? Mine expires at the end of this year.

upper bedford, lower bedford, east bedford, west bedford, bedford center

Only in New England -- although the Amana colonies in Iowa come close
