The A350, a direct competitor for Boeing's Dreamliner, made it's maiden flight in Toulouse. Like the 787 is uses composite and other advanced weight saving technology, and is supposed to be similarly efficient. It is not scheduled to appear at the 50th Paris Air Show, however. Airbus definitely can make an airplane. Call me American but I'm still partial to the 787
 
Interesting that the A350 test article has a lithium battery but the production version will have a conventional battery.

It's more of a 777 competitor. 787 is significantly smaller. But really, both manufacturers avoid direct competition, and try to target their offerings at gaps in capacity among the current fleet.
