Spent some time with friends this weekend! The blue one is the oldest flying Staggerwing!

I bought an hour ride in a Staggerwing at a local aviation museum auction. The owner/pilot let me fly it and even let me do a stall series in the plane. In addition to being beautiful, this design is a ROCK-SOLID ride. Talk about confidence building! Too bad their oil burn would almost surpass my aviation budget, not to mention fuel burn and initial purchase price. Still, they are gems and it is great to see so many being cared for by people that have the financial means to keep these magnificent machines in the air. This one got the 450 Hp Pratt and Whitney engine upgrade!

Thank you all! This was not even the primary goal for the weekend... at least not for the owner of the blue and yellow ones. It was for me!

I have a chance to own the yellow one. I could do it, and it's always been a dream of mine, but I'd have to give up photography! I need my 182!

That was the factory-installed engine for most of the Staggerwings, including this one.

@Lowflynjack , did the “oldest flying” one formerly have a black and orange paint job? (I wish I could remember that owner’s name, but he was a pipe organ builder out of Wisconsin.)

I’m not sure. It’s got a Wright 760 E2, 350 hp engine!

FYI, some history on the blue one…1935 B17E, #49, was belly-landed in the Los Angeles area in 1942, stored and forgotten until 1961, bought for restoration, new owner passed, and sold again. As of 1979 still in storage.

This is possibly the first owner who’s flown it since 1942.

I think it was being flown in California by an owner there. My friend just bought it and brought it to Texas a few weeks ago. Mid America Flight Museum Staggerwing
