Air to air nuke

Several northern SAC bases hosted Interceptor wings. The mission of the F-102/6 was to fly at the incoming bomber formations, fire the rocket (NOT missile), and do a many-G 180 degree turn at high speed to avoid the blast effects.

The Warhead yield was small, but would have caused lots of havoc for bombers in flight.

We might have had them at Griffiss AFB in 1980. Then maybe we didn't.

The Davy Crockett is still my favorite one though. A plane can leave the blast zone in seconds. OTOH, the crew for this thing had to take cover before their own blast wave arrived then leave before the fallout.

I say build it, Smedley! It's can't lose as long as they can't shoot something like it back at our guys!

Where did I read that a lone commando might have a small nuke they can strap to their leg...might have been fiction...might be real.

Sometimes I wonder how we made it through the Cold War. For instance, what if that sub captain actually fired his nuclear torpedo during the Cuba missile crisis?

I posted this somewhere else but that's me maintaining an Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM, AGM-89) while in the 416th MMS, SAC, GAFB, NY in 1981:

Yes that was a classified area, and no, I don't know when the pics were declassified.

We had official photographers in the bay twice in 3 years.

a small nuke.. would that be a snuke

A commando would stealthily slither so as to sneak the snuke into the sinister lair, activate the snuke detonator with the inevitable huge NIXIE timer display and subsequently stealthily and sneakily scram to safety from the snuke.

I think that is an AGM-86.
