Aggressive Drivers

In CA, you do have to do that at 80.

So you can spend 64 years developing bad habits, withiut ever learning that they are wrong . . . Only to be penalized near the end of your life, when you need a car to get to the doctor, the grocery store . . .

If you're going to retest people, do it more than once!

Just make everyone retake the driving test (not the sorry excuse of a written test I've taken in five states) at age 40, 60, 80, 100, it would help refresh people's minds of how they should drive . . . There's no need to target the elderly, people of all ages drive poorly.

I think after age 65 people should be allowed to drive their age......

If you're going to test people, make it a real test. On a skid pad. See if they can actually drive.

Tests today are what? Parallel parking and turn signals to go around the block?

If you're failing that, you're way WAY below safe enough to drive anything.

LOL I saw the lady at the counter here 4 years ago, give a Mexican national the answers to the test for an initial issue, in Spanish no less! Followed by giving my Oklahoma-born wife the third degree about the legitimacy of our TX marriage certificate signature in order to transfer her Oklahoma DL. Real gatekeepers of safety, beacons of morality and public safety those DMV workers...

Driver's test? LOL We got bigger fish to fry around here when it comes to enforcement of standards, to say the least.

My daughter is just learning to drive, and the local SCCA is putting on a driving skills course for teen drivers. She's going to do that, and I think she and I will do a couple of SOLOs together as well. Maybe even send her to the BMW driving school in SC.

My parents had both my brother and I go through a course exactly that, skid pads, threshold braking, etc. Founded by a former race car driver. Definitely saved me a few times. A couple years ago I signed my wife and I up for their winter driving class, great fun that was, a full day of one-on-one spinning and skidding training, in our own vehicles as well as beating up on the school cars.

Older drivers - not all slow!

100+, and she acknowledges: "I'm a speeder." She used to drive to Houston from Tallahassee a couple of times a year, and typically set the cruise at 85 or so. If pulled over, she just told the peace officer that she felt "...a terrible bout of diarrhea coming on..."; she got a police escort to the nearest Texaco.

She did finally stop driving when she was 102 (or maybe 103?), although her license was active to her 105th birthday.

By the way, if the Lord doesn't heed her calls and take her home (and there's no sign it's imminent), Miss Lillian will turn 111 this February.

About 25 years ago I met a woman at a race track. She was 65 and drove the late model class on a 1/2 mile paved race track. She was not a front runner, but she did not slow up and let the men pass her. She made those 20 something year old men work to pass her. She drove a steady line and raced within inches of the men, and they trusted her to hold her lane.

It was entertaining to watch how well she drove and she had a big fan base.
