Nothing ventured - nothing gained! I designed an advertisement, set in Pagemaker*, printed it and took it to the local daily newspaper. Well, wouldn't you know? -- their system can't read the Pagemaker*file I could have sent them. So the adv. rep. kept my print and said to send him the JPEG(s) and they'd reset it. He sent me a spec. today. The white overlays that I had put in relate to the Brunswick High School athletic teams(lower right). Upper right will read "High road to Brunswick;" lower left is "Low tide at Fort Popham;" and bottom center is ""Flights give sights: but land is grand"(under which is "Cribstone Bridge.")

HR (Oh, 4 col. x 3") (which can be scaled for smaller space applications)

Harley,

Save the files as a hi res PDF. Almost anyone can except these and I can't imagine PM doesn't have an option for this, but i'm using InDesign now (a much better program), besides PM is on its way out.

Also, with a PDF, you don't need to worry about text flow or image changing.

Thanks for the heads-up. I sold my camera store in March of 2004; hence, haven't been in the habit of doing adv. programs which, for print media, I'd used PM* since I can remember. And for what little graphics I do these days the PM6.5 suffices in lieu of spending $500+ for something I would have limited use.

Would that be Brunswick Maine? I grew up just north of there.. now flying the desert southwest... something about cold and snow in the winters.. :cheerswine:

Brunswick, ME it is. How far North were you? Lewiston-Auburn/Augusta/Waterville/Skowhegan/Madison/ and there's a lot of other "North?"

I almost came to live/fly in the desert Southwest(Scottsdale) but couldn't pass up selling the house when the market was still booming. And there aren't many lighthouses or islands to photograph out there.

HR(of course, while I'm writing this it's -12°F here in Georgetown)

Harley,

You should still be able to save the file as a PDF. I don't even have PM loaded anymore so can't check. We've been using PDFs in our print shop for years. Dirt simple and works with anything from an image setter to a copier. But, I sold the shop, thank God, so I just goof around with graphics.

Use Acrobat to make a PDF from almost any file is easy and there's some cheap (or maybe free) that will do the same. Do a search, and I'd bet you'll find something.

Make up your artwork in PM. Find out what the pub's printer uses and provide the file in that format. My guess is Lino. If you need a converter, I think Adobe provides the first couple off their site for free. You just download the file, they convert it and you download it back, then you provide it to the pub. That way, you can be sure it's the way you want it, and the pub is happy because it meets their specs.

Thank you for that insight, Chip. I've used PM for so long I have volumes of archived documents of advertisements, letterheads, envelopes(ret. addr.), bus. cards, theatre programs, and whatever from various venues of whatever it is I've involved myself during the decades.

It was when I started doing my own layouts that I quickly understood why typeset/adv. design -- done outside -- was so costly: Time-consuming.

When I started in the ad biz, you had to spec and order type and halftones, cut it out and paste it up by hand. Color was fun too, with seps and progressive proofs. Once films were made, changes were done by hand stripping.

Then came the Mac, and the world changed.

Yeah! And I'd bet that the "Glue-Stik"(sp?) business today is in the tanks, what with no-need for the original procedure of "cut and paste." And "Shoot for camera-ready?" What's that??????????
