I had to drop the airplane off at the avionics shop this morning to get the VOR adjusted. While I was there I got a few quotes for transponder ADS-B solutions. Needless to say I was shocked. I got several options from Appareo to Garmin. Something is messed up on either my encoder or the wiring going to it so I will need a new encoder and harness as well. The totals were (rounded):

Garmin GTX345 installed w/ encoder $8,000.00
Garmin GTX335 installed w/ encoder $7,000.00
Appareo out only no encoder installed $5,000.00
Appareo in/out no encoder installed $6,000.00

$1,700.00 of that was installation and $250 was for the encoder checks.

Is this inline with what others are seeing and/or paying?

Dunno. But there is a company doing a STC on ADSB unit. They said the cost is around 1300 or so and shud get certified by Oshkosh. They announced at Sun n fun. Just saying, might be worth to wait

The problem is I need to do something about a transponder anyway as mine has some issues somewhere. The diagnostics cost is adding up so it is starting to make sense to just replace it. If I do that I might as well go with a unit that is ADS-B compliant.

Sounds a bit high to me. Do you have a WAAS source or will a gps antenna be required?

And "something wrong with the encoder or wiring" sounds fishy as it is presented here. Maybe it was explained better by the shop but it shouldn't take long to identify the source of the problem there.

Wow.

I'd just wait a little longer and get a cheaper and better all in one, or buy a used one from so,emphases the jonese type.

I will need a WAAS source hence why I am going with the units listed. The transponder issue is intermittent. I have had it in the shop 3 times and every time they cannot replicate the issue. The first problem is that it was reporting my altitude over 20k feet when I would really be at 4000 ft. I finally snipped the wire that reported over 14.5k to temporarily fix that problem but now my Mode C is intermittent. On one 2 hour cross country is was in and out the whole way, on the way back it never missed a beat.

How does the L3 Lynx unit compare? I'm getting lots of ads from them and it looks nice. WAAS built in, traffic display...

I don't know, it's not even on my radar but I am sure it is more. I would not own a touch screen avionic and I have an Ipad so I don't really need the built in display.
