ADS-B Dilemma for Owners of Class A-Capable Airplanes

TIS-A is the old similarly half assed system that Mode S transponders were first created to work with. It is a service that only functions within the range of certain approach radar systems. ADS-B is superseding that.

So what does the A stand for? This is a rhetorical question, it doesn't stand for Anything. It is not part of the specification, someone just made it up out of whole cloth.

Almost like retroactively renaming an original release to "Episode 4" instead?

Exactly. They gave it the -A to distinguish it from TIS-B, which is an ADS-B system function. But the B in TIS-B stands for broadcast. They didn't pick "B" because it comes after A. They picked "B" because it is for Broadcast. But they picked the "A" because it comes before "B". Seriously. Government operation. Need I say more.

This one is on us and industry, the government never called it anything but Mode S TIS.

Well that may be, but only to be governmenty about it. :)
