I don't know this part of aviation at all. Heck, I don't like the feeling of steep turns. However, a friend of mine is into aerobatics. She has the skills, being an aerobatic instructor. Where would I find an aerobatic plane for her in Texas to rent/lease for a contest and the week leading up to it to practice?

What category is she competing in, and what kind of plane is she looking for?

Primary? Not sure. She has experience in Super Decathlon, Pitts and others. I think last time she competed she flew a Super Decathlon.

Another option would be for her to contact the IAC chapter putting on the contest, or a nearby one, and see if she can connect with someone willing to share or loan a plane.

Yes contact the IAC chapter direct and ask for options including riding with a safety pilot for the contest flights. This is commonly done if insurance/experience issues or owner comfort level (they don't know her), prevent solo borrowing someone's plane. Aerobatic aircraft available for solo rental from a flight school or individual are few and far between these days.

Safety pilot is common in Primary, and most chapters will go out of their way to facilitate this.

Roscoe, that reminds me: is there any requirement or qualification for being a safety pilot?

I'm trying to talk a buddy into flying my Super D in Primary at Sebring this fall. I would be his safety pilot for insurance purposes. I've flown 10+ contests in Sportsman in that plane. Is that enough, or do I need to be a CFI, etc?

These are all the safety pilot rules, from the rule book.

4.3 Competitor Qualifications
4.3.2 Competitors or their Safety Pilot must meet legal pilot certification requirements appropriate for their
aircraft
4.3.3 Competitors must meet legal medical requirements appropriate for their aircraft.
Exception: This requirement is waived if the competitor flies with a Safety Pilot who is legally qualified
to act as Pilot-in-Command.

4.5 Safety Pilots
4.5.1 The competitor will be the sole occupant of the aircraft during Advanced and Unlimited competition
flights. In all other categories, Safety Pilots are authorized.
4.5.2 Safety Pilots must have aerobatic competition experience.
4.5.3 The competitor has the sole responsibility for determining the qualifications of an individual to act as
a Safety Pilot in the competitor's make and model aircraft. If the competitor is a Student Pilot, the
Safety Pilot must be an appropriately-rated Certified Flight Instructor.
4.5.4 Safety pilots shall not communicate to the competitor nor manipulate the controls during the
Performance, except as needed for safety.
4.5.5 Any figure aided by the Safety Pilot shall be zeroed.

20.2 Order of Flight
20.2.6 Competitors who are also acting as a Safety Pilot in the same category must fly their Unknown Program
before flying as a Safety Pilot for another competitor in the Unknown Program.

Thanks, looks like I'm good.
