Can u still land on them without getting into trouble? There are a lot of them in my area I'd like to check out for fun

Depends on the owner. FAA doesn't care, provided you don't violate 14 CFR 91.13.

I overflew an abandoned airport the other day and I thought it would be a great place for a fly in community. I believe it was closed because as a commercial airport it drew too much traffic and generated too much noise. But with a few exceptions most fly in communities had very few actual take offs and landings. And they could generate tax revenue instead of maintenance expenses.

In Florida, a fly in community would work pretty easiely.... In California, they would burn you at the stake for even suggesting that concept...;)

Probably so. That's too bad because one of those would work out nicely in a place like Owens Valley.

depends on how abandoned it is. just because it's still on the chart as an abandoned airport doesn't mean there isn't 20' tall vegetation growing up between the cracks.

There is an abandoned airport near me I've done some helicopter training at. The neighbors get bitchy, the cops get called, the n number gets traced, and the FBO gets hate mail.
I guess it depends on who owns the n number.

There is an abandoned airport near me. 800 feet of the runway is still there and the RC guys LOVE it. After 800 feet is a well used soccer field. Could get real messy if your short field landing is less than perfect.

Another myth about California exploded!

When I was in college, back when dinosoars roamed the earth, a friend and I flew a Cherokee to the old Matagorda Air Base, where we camped out for the night.

We landed on the huge ramp in front of what was probably the old base ops.

It was awesome, the best camping trip I've ever had. There were lots of abandoned building, including a club with an intact bar in it.

Sadly, I understand that that 'they' will arrest you if your try that now, so don't.

But it was way cool.
