Was out at Olney Municipal a few weeks back (Air Tractor home, and also home to the CarterCopter gyrocopter, if I recall correctly, though I didn't see it). Saw one airplane on the ramp. This V-tail Bonanza. From the car, I was suddenly dumbstruck by the recognition of thousands of dimples on this poor bird. Got caught in a hailstorm. Don't know if it's flown since or not... dimples help a golf ball go further, with less drag--wonder if you could STC that dimple effect, has to be good for a couple of knots, eh?

Would insurance pay to re-skin it, or would such an event render it a loss?

IA's call. Control surface damage usually disqualifies them, but dings on wings and fuse might go either way. Lots of banged up airplanes flying around every day.

Legally, is it unairworthy?

Some cold beer and a cooler of dry ice on a hot summer day and they'll come right out :)

Replacing the skin wouldn't be that tough a job in terms of skill required. Pretty straightforward sheet metal work -- the kind of stuff I did in my first semester at AHS when I was, like, 13 years old.

That Bonanza probably could fly again if it could be ferried to an A&P school. Let the students work on it. Replacing the skin would be a perfect project for a sheet metal class.

I believe the Bonanza has skins that are not made using common shop practices, and are better bought than made.

I don't believe I'd try it, even if the was a profit margin.

Ah, okay then. I stand corrected.
