At this timestamp on 12/17, the windchill in many parts of Colorado (including at my house near KAPA) is colder than McMurdo or Amundsen (the official South Pole) in Antarctica. Of course by Tuesday, 12/20, the snow around here will be gone and the temps will be in the 50s again.

Welcome to Colorado.

I'll take your Cold War and raise you one defcon level, in Montana this morning it is so cold that chuck Norris had to put on a shirt!

Of course I had work to do outside today. And it is windy and spitting snow.

And the electricity went off this morning about 6am for about 3 hours, and we had no indoor heat....

Since I am on a well, when we have no electricity, we have no water.

Next house has pellet stove heat, and will have an emergency generator as well as solar power.

With this weather I might as well go back to Alaska.....:lol:

You boys need to come visit us at Amelia's Landing. I took this pic yesterday.

I need to stay here, in cool, but not cold California...

But my flight back to Denver leaves this afternoon.

... and the temps will be in the 50s again.

Which is why I'm not bothering to plow the driveway... f-that. Haha.

Odd storm. Wind was mostly out of the east out here all night, and snowing (usually not those two together unless it's an upslope storm, but it wasn't). For once, the house couldn't act like a snow fence and dump snow in front of the garage doors. Instead the west facing deck was full of snow.

Cold out there. Very crunchy.

Why would you need to plow that driveway? I mean even if it wasn't going to melt off by the end of the day and become a giant muddy mess? I usually plow my driveway at about a foot deep. Once I waited until 2 feet but my truck got stuck, and then I had to plow by hand.......which took 2 days and really wasn't much fun.....:nonod:

Local airport apparently had a few cancellations due to wind & dust as the front passed. Highest reported there was 46kts, 1/2sm/500VV - not usually enough to impair proceedings.

That's why normally I don't. If the 4WD vehicles can pack it down without getting stuck, it'll be mud soon enough anyway...

Plow may be the wrong word. It's the tractor with the three point snowblower on it and not set so low as to dig in at all. Just take off a layer of snow when it gets too deep.

Plowing would really beat it up. That'd cost me at least another day with the box grader attachment in the Spring fixing it. :)

One word: road base

okay, that's two words....anyway it'll take care of the mud...sorta spendy and totally unneeded 300 days of the year but it'll take care of any mud problems.

Yeah I know. Or rhyolite. It needs three tractor trailer dump trailers worth (there's a circle drive not pictured in front of the garage area and we''re leaning toward doing a concrete slab in front of those doors), and it had the wrong sort of rocks (not by us) dumped on it a number of years ago, which have mostly disappeared into the dirt over quite a while.

So it's about time to order up the trucks. Was considering doing it last summer, but...

1: Still enough rocks it doesn't turn into a complete mud bog. Especially up near the garage doors where humans are walking.

2: Me. Cheapskate. "One more year... it'll go one more year..."

3: Needs a little more grading work than I can quite do with the little tractor. Have to hire out getting it nice and flat again and fixing some drainage and erosion problems up where it interfaces with the neighborhood road. Which of course is a good time to reference item 2 again. :)

I spent a couple afternoons grading it, pulling the ditches a little, and dragging it to help the rocks not disappear last summer. The little tractor just doesn't have the power to dig in and really grade it correctly. But I was able to rip it down about 2-3" and "de-washboard" it. Leveling the larger waves needs more horsepower.

I got it "good enough for a driveway" this year. Maybe next summer we will treat ourselves to someone straightening it out and dumping some appropriate stuff on it. I kinda hate spending money on dirt. None of the pickup trucks or the Subaru seem to care much. Ha.

Meanwhile where I live in Florida, whole past week I was off sunny. Highs in the mid 70's. Perfect weather for the local fly in Community weekly air show and gathering. The winter time reminds me of why i commute....saw this funny thing at the gathering. However tonight I'll be in the frigid 4 degree North for workIMG_3305.JPG

It isn't just Colorado, unfortunately. Friday our "feels like" temperature was -16. Yesterday we got 6+ inches of snow. Today it's raining an going to be in the 50s. I've been sick for five weeks and the weather isn't helping :/

Forget the name but those funny things fetch some serious coin. I don't they they're manufactured any longer. Italian made maybe, just don't recall the name.

Easy fix: go down to the nearest pot market, tell them that you dropped a big bag of dope somewhere on your driveway and the person who finds it can keep it! Driveway would be cleared of in minutes.
