Made myself a lowcountry boil tonight. Also found the local seafood market where I can buy local oysters by the bucket. NICE!

Anyway. The shrimp was SUPERB.

Got out my oyster knife to pop a few open and one was wigglin' at me.

I thought, this can't be right.

Sure enough. It was a little tiny crab hanging out in the oyster's shell with him.

I "googled" it. Who knew? This is a common occurrence and even considered a delicacy.

I didn't eat him. But, you learn something new everyday.

Dang...and would'ja look at the size of that can of boiled peanuts! You sir, know how to eat! Lol

Never run across one on the half shell but find them all the time when we steam them. Never knew what color they were raw. A bright orange and white when cooked.

But you wouldn't eat the crab? Lol

Alrighty. After reading some more, I discovered that they're common to oysters collected of the coast of NC (Which is exactly how these were advertised). I found a place that guaranteed one in your first dozen. So I figured my odds were pretty good to find another if I shucked another half dozen.

Yep. Statistics are real.

Found one more.

ate him.

not much to tell. kinda like chewing on an oak leaf.

and, here's your shot of the boiled peanuts.

Boiled peanuts? Must be a thing not common around here. Prefer dry roasted, myself.

One of our favorites we had with our friends the first time in Glenville, Ga in 1992.

Uh...why would you eat any of it? Nasty :)

My wife's from Indiana near the Ohio border, she suffers from the same problem. Poor thing sits there and eats grilled chicken while the rest of us have a meal. :D

Nate, boiled peanuts are yet another way that southerners have invented to ingest large amounts of salt. Your dry roasted peanuts are only capable of carrying a small amount of salt that clings to the outside. Boiled peanuts absorb it. :D

That's 'cause boiling water around here is too cool to do the peanuts any good...

Actually, some peanuts are vastly improved by boiling. Any dry roasted peanuts have to start out as pretty good.

Umm, do you need a house guest?

As a born and raised Ohioan, I would like to point out that there are plenty of us who love food from the sea. While not a fan of oysters myself, pretty much everything else with a shell or hard covering, I will destroy.

Oh holy hell. They boil them in salt?! I'm sooooo there. Now I need to find some!

I was thinking just boiled in water.

That can has 10,580 mg of sodium in it. Or 4.6 times the daily recommended amount. It says 46 servings on the side (1/4 cup). in reality, it serves as a snack for 2-3 people.
