Spent a couple minutes window shopping, and found a couple planes that may, or may not float your boat. I wouldn't mind owning either one.

A 1961 Skyhawk:

A 1976 Skyhawk:

This one has some hours on it, about 8300, which may mean it's been a trainer. On the good side, it's been flown regularly, it looks good, it has decent radios. On the down side, it may have been flown pretty hard, and that means a VERY thorough annual for pre-flight. Personally, if I had the $$$ I'd consider it. I've flown 12,000 hours trainers that were fine birds and rarely had issues.

I really like the second skyhawk. Very nice plane. And the price is in my range too.

Thanks Joe, I'll be following up on that one.

I don't really want a high wing - but if the perfect high wing comes along I'll take it. But it has to be perfect. Absolutely perfect.

I think I've decided on either the Cheetah/Tiger or the Warrior/Archer.

But....perfect condition Skyhawk will do (just won't make me as happy)

I didn't know your budget. I thought the $45K might be a little high. If it's comfortably within your budget, I'd look at a Sundowner instead. I kind of like the one I'm posting, but there are a number of them around at about the same price. I'd love that big cabin. The cost to the roominess, though, is that you'll get about the same speed out of the 180 hp Sundowner as you will out of a 160 hp Warrior or Skyhawk from what I hear. You do get better useful load, and a bladder busting 60 gallon fuel tank capacity if you can sit still long enough to burn that much gas. The KX-170 radios in this one work fine, until they break. Then they aren't worth repairing. Instead, you can get the same slide in replacements that are in that Skyhawk you like for about $1500 each.

If it won't make you happy, don't buy it!! No sense in flying around in something you don't like. BTW, that $45K Skyhawk is not perfect.

Nick, If you decide on one of these high time 172s make sure you have the gear boxes checked closely. A trainer that has had some hard landings can have some problems in this area, and it is an expensive repair.
