From this months NASA Callback... Sounds like a good excuse to fly under a bridge!

“A Cigarette Boat…Was Upon Us”
An instructor pilot and student aboard a float-equipped PA18 became airborne prematurely when they encountered unexpected high-speed boat traffic on a river.

  • We had just departed the sea plane base and back ‘water’ taxied approximately 500-600 yards down river towards downtown in order to have plenty of room to execute a normal water takeoff up river and into the wind. It was a beautiful day and there was moderate boat traffic on the river.

We cleared the area around and behind us, completed our takeoff checklist, and executed a turn into the wind and up river. It seemed that as we maneuvered into position and after we turned all of our lights on, that all the boats in the general area pretty much motored towards the sides of the river. We began our takeoff run and for a split second our nose was high as we were coming onto our ‘step.’ Once the nose of the aircraft leveled out, we accelerated relatively quickly. As we were nearing flying speed a cigarette boat, traveling at a very high rate of speed, came around the corner under the bridge and was upon us. I believe the boat operator noticed us just in time, but because of the speed he was carrying, he could only alter his course slightly. However, in doing so, he cut right in front of us. We were traveling too fast to chop the throttle and maneuver[so] as not to create a hazard to the other boat operators or ourselves, yet too slow to fly. When we hit his wake, we became airborne. We grabbed a hand full of flaps so [as] not to slam back into the water. Once in ground effect, we accelerated to a speed…too slow to climb above the bridge beginning to fill our windscreen. We were left with only one safe option…Fly under the bridge. We were approximately 5-10 feet above the water, 40-50 feet under the bridge. When we cleared the bridge it was…an uneventful climb to 1,500 feet heading up river. That was without a doubt too close for comfort…I believe we made the safest decision for the situation which dictated split-second thinking.

If that didn't require split second timing and two crazy people to pull off I"d say it was planned.

That is crazy.

No that it would matter in this case, but I never understood why floatplanes did not have priority over powerboats...

That's a great story.

I always thought that Cig Boats were like the 5.0 Mustangs - they hand you the keys along with your A* license....

The primary issue is one of draft. Many vessels are constrained in their ability to maneuver and are confined to a narrow channel where there is enough water (consider that the Rules of the Road were written around larger vessels) where as a sea plane can often operate in mere inches.

Makes sense.. thanks Hennings

When I learned boating I was taught to stay the heck out of the way of seaplanes because they have no forward visibility when getting up on the step and little ability to maneuver afterwards. Years later when I actually read the rules I was shocked to learn that seaplanes didn't have special ROW rules - I'd "only" been taught common sense.

That kind of boat is more commonly referred to as a "penis extension"

They aren't particularly practical, but they are a hell of a lot of fun. Personally, I prefer a Nortech to a Cigarette for monohulls, and if it comes to real balls out racing, I'll take a Skater. It's fun cruising up the beach line passing 172s and Cherokees....

By those who've never driven one. Hop in, push the throttles to the stops, trim it up, and suddenly, you find you don't need no Viagra.... I used to pull a water skiier behind a 47' Fountain with 3700hp...

Not only that, they are at the bottom of the ROW list, they have to stay out of everyones way. The list from greatest rights to least:

Vessel Not Under Command, (NUC) A vessel restricted in her ablity to maneuver normally due to exceptional circumstance, ie broke rudder.

Vessel Constrained By Draft, (RRR) a vessel A vessel restricted in her ablity to maneuver normally due to her draft. ie, deep draft tanker in a harbor channel.

Vessel Restricted in Ability to Maneuver, (RAM) A vessel restricted in her ability due to occupational constraints. ie, a dredge, salvage or commercial diving operation working on location.

Vessel Engaged in Fishing, A vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver due to gear in the water. ***This DOES NOT apply to small recreational fishing boats trolling along. Think Shrimp Trawler where if the back up they will become disabled in their gear.***

Vessel Limited in it's Ability to Maneuver. A vessel limited in its ability to maneuver due to design, ie. a vessel under sail.

Motor Vessels

Seaplanes Though not directly codified into the rules, this category includes Surface effect ships such as the Russian sea monsters and hovercraft not in displacement mode.

In order to take any of the special rights categories, one must be flying the appropriate day shapes or lights for the applicable category.

I thought RAM topped CBD.

Depends if you're in US Inland rules area where there isn't a specific draft rule, or 72 COLREGS. It's been a long time since I looked or taught it, I may have it backwards. Regardless, a seaplane will lose in a collission with a triple red vessel.:yikes:

New Reels Catch Fish. . . is my second favorite mnemonic. The first is:

Let's Keep Poor Charlie's Overalls From Getting Soiled.

Not nautical, but somewhat related to your post in the other thread I just responded to.

Only EE geeks could like the standard resistor color code:

(Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue Violet, Grey, White).

Mine was always "True Virgins Make Dull Company, Add Whiskey"
