A while back there was some mention of the FAA starting to require periodic renewal of aircraft registration, rather than the permanent one-time registration we used to have. Stated reason was to free up tail numbers of aircraft no longer flying (no comment). OK, so I have a 1983 172Q and don't remember now when the requirement begins or what's expected of registered owners. When reading about this, my recollection is that the FAA would contact me so I stopped reading. The seed was planted though, and with a new year approaching I'm wondering What If (they use the wrong address, USPS loses it, etc.). My assumption is that regardless of why renewal isn't submitted (and paid for), my government will assess penalty and interest.
*When? At what point do I try to figure out how to take the initiative on this?
*Where? Anyone have a link to the FAA page where I can do this or find out when my plane is to be done?
*How? Also curious what the process is like - anyone already renewed, who can advise us on the level of pain involved?

If you look up your N # on the FAA registry online, you will see a new entry on the record which depicts when your current registration expires.

3 months prior to that date the FAA will send a notice to the last address provided for the registrar of that N #.

more info at

the FAA will not accept re-registration applications prior to the notification letter issuance.

It will jsut give me an excuse to paint the plane with a new N number every so many years. :D

That's how we can win through civil disobedience...quarter million registration refuseniks, they can't prosecute us all!

Thanks for the info & link! I'm also glad to know that there's some talk of repealing this new hassle. Two new things to read up on. :)

Edit: I found the link for looking my plane up on FAA, so here it is if you'd like to check yours: http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNum_Inquiry.aspx. Took me a while to notice it, under "Aircraft Description" in the right column, "Expiration Date" (mine's good until the end of 2013).
