A base jumper ground loops

That had to hurt, more practice is in order.

Shoot twisted when he popped it. Looks like he tried to steer away but just didnt have any room to work with.

Very unlucky in that he caught that rock jutting out as well.

Rule #1 in base jumping.

Jump away from the f***ing cliff!

I've jumped that exit point, the climb up is sketchy. As off heading openings go that wasn't that bad he had time to turn it around. He also could have turned it around post cliff strike instead of riding the wall down. Remember kids fly all the way through the crash. Don't stop flying til nothing is moving.

He hit the only sharp pointy rock on that cliff. Damn the luck!!

Panic from the moment the chute opened, couldn't hardly work the toggles the stared straight at the only thing on that cliff side that was going to hurt and (naturally and predictably, always look exactly where you want to go and never look at what you want to avoid, your body always wants to take you to where your eyes are leading) drove right into it. At that point he just plain quit trying to fly, probably completely disassociated from the event.

For many years when I told people I flew gliders, they'd invariably respond with, "you mean like hang gliders?".

I'd say, "no, like airplanes without an engine... I don't like being the landing gear for anything I fly". Watching this I was thinking the same thing but that's just BS. All flying is good fun unless you screw up but that rocky little crotch smasher sure looked mean, Ouch!

Yes, the '10 fits me just fine.

Yeah. Noticed that. Let go of the control lines, but he was pretty badly hurt.

How about that the plan in the first place was to jump down onto a mountain road? There was no place to land on the cliff side.

Imagine driving along and having dis goof land on your car.

There is no pain in situations like that, you notice he was pushing off the wall just fine.

He did look both ways twice before jumping. It went downhill fast after that.

That's kinda hard to watch.

You can see cars coming from far away there. There is enough room to land in the dirt on the side and collapse the canopy off into the bushes. Your car is safe from these guys, is my car safe from your airplane flying overhead?

Yeah, hurt to watch. Off heading openings are not good.

Once the canopy got fully inflated and was squarely facing the wall I'm not sure it is possible to turn it around.

I vote with the lucky and unlucky at the same time thought.

A vigorous rear riser pull would have turned it around. It would stall, collapse, turn, and surge a bit, better then riding the wall.

Maybe, but it seems like that might be worse in this situation. You'd pretty much have to collapse a good part of one side and by the time you got it turned around and inflated you might hit the planet moving pretty fast. Kind of like the 2 canopies out debate, always stuck at the "it depends" point. Good food for thought though.

It also looks to me like a skydiving rig rather than a base jumping rig. That's OK, but might have added some to the off-heading opening.....

He aint walking straight after that one. It hurt me to watch it... and watch it... and watch it....

Ouch. Painful to watch!
