A-10C Warthog flight sim

My roommate has this game and he loves it. I've played it a few times when I could get the computer from him.

One thing to realize about this game is its not a point and shoot flight sim. You have 5 - 10 steps to arm, target and drop/launch weapons. The start up procedure alone can take 10 mins.

The damage is realistic as possible. The flight dynamics are very realistic. If you get shot in a engine and a rotor disk comes lose IT WILL damage other areas. Soviet SAMs are not to be play with just like in real life. I have fun with trying to fly the bird home after getting half my wing taken off and a engine going looney.

I've had some very interesting damage taken while doing the missions. If you get hit and notice only one warning light flashing don't bush it off and keep going. I've had some weapon light going off before and the next thing I know both of my engines are self destructing.

Overall I'm getting the game as soon as I upgrade my computer.

Great sim. My dog hates the "Bitchin' Betty" voice for some reason though and shows great concern when she says "Altitude, altitude".

game is "too" realistic for me. I lake flight games that are a little more game oriented than super realistic. there is just way too much to do in this game to even get the plane off the ground with all systems powered up. plus if you want the controller get ready to dish out $5oo bucks. that is a little pricy for something you can only use on one specific game.

I havent played a video game in years but that game looks sweet. I used to love LongbowII and similar. What kind of computing power do we need to run that thing? I'm sure my old laptop will not cut it.

I don't think your laptop will cut it -- it's pretty demanding graphically. I have a new computer so its not a problem on my setup. Here's a pretty hilarious video of 3 dudes trying to cold start the Warthog, you get a good idea of how complex it is. Gets really funny once they get the engines on and start taxiing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huVi6rdPE4I&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Why doesn't anyone do any kind of development like this for PS3?

Kinda limited with the controller i'd guess

It seems like it would be a ripe market. PS3 takes USB connections just like the PC. I don't want to buy/build a gamer PC because I already have a PS3 sitting there that rarely gets used. If there was a flight sim game, I would probably be willing to spend some of the money saved on the gamer PC build-up and put it towards 'PS3-compatible flight controls'.

Just seems odd that the market hasn't been penetrated yet. Maybe Sony has a high barrier to entry for development? Dunno... :dunno: It's a bummer, though. :(

I'm no expert but I don't think the flight sim market is all that profitable. There is definitely a hardcore contingent of flight sim enthusiasts out there but for a game like this -- whose main purpose is complete, sometimes tedious realism -- I don't think many people would be interested. Popular video games are pretty good representations of todays ADHD world: just instantaneous, chaotic action and mindless button pressing. While A-10C comes with a "game mode" which is more arcade-like, it's probably still enough of a complicated sim to scare off the mainstream gamer kids. I mean, it comes with a 650-page manual for crap's sake!

I'm only in the training missions so far and can say that it is completely awesome. I figure as a bonus it's also a solid supplement for my PPL training :D
