787, Boeing logo flight

BFI-local, 19.4 (quite a log entry)

Heh. I love these. They've done a bunch of them, as has Gulfstream. Cool that Flightaware exists so we can see it. Wonder how they file the flight plan.

Looks like maybe they are aborting...

I got a kick out of what they filed...

Foreflight choked on the Lat/Long format...

But it tried!

Only 44 hrs in my Skylane. Haha.

And for the Eagle-eyes... Yes I need to download the rest of the latest chart update still. ;)

Looks like they're continuing on -- over the Nebraska panhandle as I'm typing this.

Not quite on the homestretch now, but certainly on the last quarter.

Flightaware fooled me with a change in projected track (dashed line). Sorry Boeing, I'm sure you guys never thought of aborting on your logo run.

Wow that plane has quite a range at 7:28 EST they have 14:55 in the bag and 4 hours left . Impressive!

So the real question is why is Boeing doing this? I mean really who but a bunch of geek pilots who hang on web boards are even going to notice this?

You have to understand, engineers are geeks.

The 787 is still undergoing certification testing, and they need to burn off the flight hours for testing purposes anyway. Giving the FMS a complicated routing may also be part of the test.

Engineers like to do things like this just because it's cool. On one program I was on, we had the computer output a dialog box of "Dollars per hour", which took your fuel flow and multiplied it by the average cost of a gallon of 100LL.

The 747 version was much uglier. Someone has written some software to figure out the waypoints, methinks.

My thought is that, after the 747 flight got some publicity for Boeing, the reps figured out that they should do something that would get publicity for the 787.

I have a Q. Assuming you accurately entered the flight plan, why did FF so flub the routing? Operationally, could you expect your own flight plan to be likewise FUBAR'd? Ha, in the most literal sense is the screen shot a FUBAR.

Well, they probably need to be airborne for that long for some reason (testing on a cold soaked plane or doing other real time tests, plus proving the plane can fly for 19+hrs), why not do something "fun"?

I'm thinking the only way this airframe will pay is on the long routes...Dallas to Sydney, Aust or New York to Hong Kong...something like that.

I have no idea but I suspect oceanic routes will require actual flight time + ETOPS.

No, it's just that FF doesn't like the format of the Lat/Long coordinates shown by the Flightaware site. It can do Lat/Long, it's just a different format.

I cut and pasted from Flightaware to FF just to see what it'd do, just for fun. It got "close" minus all the Lat/Long waypoints. It threw those out with a warning pop-up prior to that screenshot.

Cool. Looks like they flew directly over my house on the return leg. I shoulda waved......

There's a lot of photographers using FlightAware and really long lenses to shoot those really cool photos of airliners going overhead in the Flight Levels. Some are really good at it.

What are the KDxxx and KPxxx waypoints?

Ah, they are on the exact lines of latitude where they cross lines of longitude, on the Enroute High charts, every 3 degrees. KD75W, KD78W, KD81W, for example. Not sure if there are 'uncharted' KD76W and KD77W...

So did you use Excel or perl to fix all of them?

Or were you old-skool with tr, awk, or sed? ;)

Close. I did it with a Regex capture/substitution expression in Notepad++'s advanced search & replace.

Heh.

Notepad++ is the only way to fly on Windows if you don't have Cygwin loaded.

I do draw the line at Strawberry Perl though. No no no. ;)

And the obligatory news story: Link

Nothing like a great promotional piece for Boeing and Flightaware.
