Trying to find more info, but apparently El Al flight 27 is having some sort of issue and is going to be forced to land gear up... Probably coming soon to your local CNN.

Trying to find more info

Here we go:

El Al Flight 27 from Tel Aviv to Newark has turned back to its origin after a landing gear malfunction. The Boeing 777-200ER is due to land at 5:15 am local time Monday, which is 10:15 pm ET.

The left main landing gear of the widebody jet, carrying 280 passengers and crew, is reportedly stuck in the up position and the plane will be forced to make a gear up landing.

Israeli Air Force fighter jets have been dispatched to examine the plane in the air as it dumps fuel over the Mediterranean Sea.

Over 70 ambulances have staged at Ben Gurion International Airport. A major highway has been closed to allow the ambulances to easily reach hospitals if needed.

"We have no evidence this is a terrorist event" (just waiting for that one)

The report I quoted was after the 9:45pm report.

I know... But then they deleted it (it was showing as 10:00 PM). Then after I posted that they posted that it had landed again, with a timestamp of 10:31 PM.

There was also a 10:15pm report that also indicated landing. Also some tweets too, but I would trust those even less than real time news coverage which has been known to get stuff wrong the first time around.

Anyways......

Sounds a lot less like an emergency. The gear did not come up and stow properly so they came back. We will see what the whole story is and I expect it to be a lot less dramatic than the initial news reports made it out to be.

Even worse, the news channels are following Twitter and quoting it on-air. Yeah, great, you can get some stuff from people on the front lines that way, but who knows who's telling the truth?

Well, WE know that a simple gear-up is unlikely to cause any deaths, but we also know that the news agencies DON'T know that. But if you're the guy in the left seat, you declare anyway and get all the resources there, just in case.

After a midair at the home drome a few years back a local station ran with the "eyewitness" report of a man of middle eastern decent parachuting from one of the planes and running off:mad2:

I think the 777 has a little door in the bottom so the FO can go down and beat on the gear to make it extend properly. Too bad nobody around here knows anything about them.

It looks as if they somehow managed to get the gear down:

It turns out everyone was aware of the door it's just due to TSA rules the only tool on board was a 2" wooden emery board which proved totally ineffective. Fortunately it was discovered that a hapless DeWalt salesman was on board who had accidently left his company's complete line of 18v power tools in his carry on. Said tools mysteriously sailed through screening without incident and saved the day......for the insurance company who was really the only one at great risk for a well-executed gear-up landing.

The DeWalt salesman was immediately arrested on landing as a suspected terrorist for smuggling the alleged contraband on board. This had the unintended effect of creating massive delays this morning in the ATC system when 22,948 John Smiths (the name of the salesman) showed up at the airport and found themselves inexplicably on a no-fly list.

No TSA nonsense coming out of Ben Gurion. Their security actually makes sense as they are on the frontlines. Unfortunately their system is not easily implemented here as we have about fifty times more daily flights than they do.

it can't be implemented here because it is based on profiling. That is something not PC in the US but makes more sense to me than the current groping!!!

Because groping and millimeter wave scans *are* PC? ;)

How about we use what works? Oh yeah, we're Americans.

My Winston Churchill quote disappeared from Tapatalk when posting that. Weird.

You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else. - Winston Churchill

Profiling won't work here either, who's the target profile? We've got homegrown kooks who would be just fine blowing up Gov't buildings or entire cities.
