Subject: Undergraduate Pilot Training Candidate Information
1. Thank you for your interest in becoming a pilot with the 709th Airlift Squadron. The following information is to
help you get selected for one of these sought-after positions. We do accept resumes and applications without all of
the listed requirements and you can update your file as requirements are accomplished. Please forward a package to
the Chief of Hiring at the above address or e-mail containing as much of the following information as possible.
a. 4 year college degree (or graduation scheduled within 180 days).
b. Minimum: Private Pilot Rating. 100 flight hours as a pilot with your FAA Instrument Rating are highly desirable.
c. AFOQT
d. Test of Basic Aviation Skills (TBAS). This test is a tool used to assist the Air Force Reserve selection board to
measure psychomotor skills, cognitive abilities, motivation and vigilance.
e. An Air Force Class 1 flying physical with an endorsement, “OTS/UPT Qualified”, and be certified by HQ
AETC/SG (note: it takes approximately 60 days for AETC/SG to complete this endorsement). This physical is
accomplished after the unit has offered you a position, not prior to the interview.
f. Age: 28 maximum (allows adequate time to process application and attend OTS prior to UPT). You must not be
older than 30 years old when you begin UPT.
g. College Transcripts (Official or Unofficial)
h. Significant civilian work experience in a position of responsibility.
i. At least three letters of recommendation speaking to the issues of airmanship and officer potential.
j. Prior Service: Please include a copy of all EPR/OPR (evaluations) and provide several military references
2. If you meet these minimum qualifications, you may be considered and scheduled for an interview with the Squadron
UPT Screening Board. This interview will normally be held during the Unit Training Assembly (UTA). The
interview itself is not an indication that you will be sponsored by us. Final selection is accomplished by the Air
Force Reserve Board, which normally meets every eight weeks throughout the year.
3. If you are selected, you will be expected to serve as a full time reservist during pilot training (approx. 16 months) and
for at least 8-12 months with the squadron for seasoning training. The specific number of seasoning days depends on
available funding for that particular fiscal year. The purpose of seasoning training is to build a minimum base of
military C-5 flying experience.
4. We want to thank you for your interest in 709 th Airlift Squadron. Please keep your application package current

What are the chances of a waiver on the age for a prior Air Force veteran with his private and instrument rating (and working on commercial) ? Anybody know?

A few classes ago there was a 37 year old going through upt. Never talked to him so not sure on his story. But that gave me hope but even still im older than that so I gave up the dream. Haha

Haha, I contacted the POC, I'm only 5 years over the limit so we will see. Being prior mil I know there is generally a waiver for everything, but finding someone to be a champion for you and go through the motions is the hard part.

Yep prior enlisted here as well and yeah there is a waiver for anything. I'm 9 years over so id never even make it through OTS before 40 much less pilot training.

Well good luck to you! Push for it and if you make it and you go through UPT at Columbus let me know. I maintain the t6 simulators there.

Awesome! Thanks and will do, I'm actually from Cincinnati myself so going to CBUS for a bit would be nice

Oh man you will be disappointed..haha it is Columbus AFB Mississippi. For UPT in the AF you got columbus, ms; enid, ok; del rio, tx; wichita falls, tx...all sprawling cities with new up to date shopping and malls and filled with stuff to do...that was sarcasm. Hahaha of all id go Columbus and not just because I live here. MS has inexpensive aviation compared to other places and a few hour hop takes me most places I want to be.

The waiver depends on how bad they need people, and how many qualified candidates are applying. 5 years over seems like a lot but it's worth a shot. If your goal is to fly, honestly getting on with a regional may be your best route with the way things are now.

Yeah, that's the path I'm on now anyways, but figured it certainly couldn't hurt if by some miracle I was able to get a waiver. I would still be building time to get to the airlines obviously, though I guess not as much or as quickly as I could going the CFI route.
