My nephew is on a sub, so he knows a little bit more about that life than I do.

He sent a link to something I was never aware of: The only ground combat operations on the Japanese mainland was when the crew of the submarine USS Barb went ashore and blew up a train.

    https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/b/barb-i.html

    It's actually kind of bad-ass.

The photo of their battle flag shows a train at the bottom.

edit: 75, not 70. I spent more time proofing the message than the title.

Why did we blow up a train after the war was over? ;)

Here is a close(er) up view of the Barb's battle flag. Look bottom center to see the train. -Skip

They also had one of the absolute best submarine skippers of WWII - Admiral Fluckey.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_B._Fluckey

He was one of the few submarine Medal Of Honor recipients that was not posthumous. Throw in (4) Navy Crosses!!! And somewhere around 12 war patrols. To have meet him and/or O'Kane would have been amazing. My submarine school Command Master Chief had a WWII patrol pin with god knows how many stars. What a fantastic generation of people and warriors.

Once between our own patrols our Captain arranged a special visitor for the crew. This gray haired full Captain walked in. Our CO had our XO read his many-years-since-past MOH citation...Pearl Harbor. Then the still-not-retired Captain took his MOH off and handed it to the closest guy! He had each of us hold it. Incredible. Really makes you think.
