Is just me, or is the pilot using both hands on the cyclic? :p

Any background info on this photo?

Interesting picture and article, Steve. Since the 42 had a collective (like all helicopters), all I can think of is that maybe the controls are backward? Left hand on the cyclic, right hand on the collective? Being right handed, I sudder at the thought!

Actually, if you zoom in (available in IE7) you can see his left hand is on the collective and his right hand is on the cyclic. The camera angle makes it look like he's holding on to a single stick for dear life. The dear life part is probably true!

Some interesting videos of an interview with Young regarding helicopter development at:

Another interesting link, Steve, thanks!

I blew up the picture as you suggested, and I believe that you're right. I think what fooled me is a collective that is nearly vertical in a hover. I've never flown a helicopter where pulling pitch against the stop would get the collective at more than maybe a 30 degree angle to the deck. It certainly looks uncomfortable, though...
